About the Author

Prakash S. Bisen received his PhD in 1972 and his DSc in 1981. He is currently pursuing his research in the field of medical biotechnology as emeritus scientist at Defense Research Development Establishment, Defense Research Development Organization, Ministry of Defense, Government of India, Gwalior, India. He has also been elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, for his enormous contributions to the field of biology. Bisen is the external scientific advisor to a Barcelona-based multinational company, Biokit, which is involved in the manufacturing of diagnostic kits. He has to his credit 200 publications in indexed international journals of repute, six international patents, as well as six international books on contemporary issues in biological sciences.

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Just a couple of months after Arun wishes he had a sister with whom to celebrate Rakhi Day, his parents announce that they are adopting a girl. As he awaits his new sibling's arrival, he carefully crafts a special paper airplane, pretending that it is flying to India to bring her home. After more waiting, Dad finally retrieves Asha, who gives Arun the rakhi bracelet she clung to during the flight. An author's note provides additional details about adoption and the North Indian Hindu holiday that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, symbolized by a bracelet given by the sister. Realistic illustrations spread across the pages in muted colors and show well the characters' range of emotions, but Arun's adultlike narration does not match the innocence of his actions. While the text states that Arun is eight, his size seems to vary from picture to picture. Although Krishnaswami does add a unique perspective to a genre largely focused on Chinese adoptions, Janet Morgan Stoeke's Waiting for May (Dutton, 2005), Jean Davies Okimoto's The White Swan Express (Clarion, 2002), and Ed Young's My Mei Mei (Philomel, 2006) more fully describe the adoptive family's process.–Julie R. As the year drags on and his parents speak of forms and permissions, Arun studies the baby's photograph and eagerly plans for her arrival. Finally, a full year later, his father returns with baby sister Asha and a special rakhi or bracelet for brother Arun. Filled with tender details, the story opens and closes on the Hindu holiday Rakhi, a day when siblings honor each other. Chalk pastel illustrations follow the text closely, but the dark palette of blues and grays sets a somber tone for the joyful story. Arun's tale presents an authentic slice of East Indian American life and provides a fresh perspective in adoption stories. An appended note adds information about Rakhi. In addition to writing, she was the founding Co Director of the Bisti Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, which fosters high quality teaching of writing across grade levels. The inspiration for Bringing Asha Homecame from an event at which Krishnaswami met families who had adopted children from India. She lives in Aztec, New Mexico.

The Plot: Arun's family adopts a baby girl from India.

The Good: The story is framed by the Hindu holiday Rakhi, a holiday that is about brothers and sisters. Arun wishes he had a sister so that he could celebrate Rakhi. A few months later, he finds out the family is going to adopt a little girl from India, the country where Arun's father was born. The story ends with the baby, Asha, (now about one years old) arriving just in time for Rakhi. It's a holiday I was unfamiliar with; but it's a perfect holiday to celebrate children becoming siblings, and it's also one that will be easily understood by children hearing the story.

I love that this story was framed by this holiday; and I love that the pictures and text show a family that celebrates a diverse heritage. Rakhi is celebrated; during October, there is a jack-o'-lantern on a table. The pictures, as well as the text, show a biracial family. (Truth be told, I didn't pick that up until my second reading, when I noticed that Dad's country of origin was mentioned but not Mom. The Lee & Low website confirmed this. I like that it's not a "hit you over the head with it" part of the story.)

This is a great story about adoption, particularly international adoption, and the long wait many families face in waiting for their adoptive child. "When you adopt a baby from one country and bring her to another, there are many governmental forms to fill out and laws to follow," Dad says. "It takes time." (I am so good. I am not making any snarky comments about international adoptions and certain celebrities.) While the actual process takes a long time, Bringing Asha Home shows a family taking the steps to welcome the baby into their hearts long before the child is brought into their home: a room is prepared, Arun makes her presents of paper airplanes, and a birthday party is held.

Bring this book home!

Arun really wants a little sister. His best friend, Michael, has one and even though Michael isn't that impressed by the experience, Arun thinks having a baby sister would be great. He tells Michael, "In India, where my dad was born, sisters tie shiny bracelets on the wrists of their brothers. The bracelets are called rakhi too, just like the holiday. Brothers and sisters promise to be good to each other, and everyone eats special sweets."

Arun soon finds out that he will have a baby sister. Mom and Dad are adopting a baby girl, Asha, from India. But the wait and the papers and the regulations are excruciating. Arun, in the meantime, turns eight and celebrates his birthday without Asha. The family even celebrates Asha's first birthday without her. Arun makes do by fashioning the best paper airplane he's ever created for his sister and placing it on a shelf in her room.

Finally, Arun tells us, "a few weeks later, on a sticky-warm Saturday, I find an envelope from India in the mailbox." It's the letter. "We help Dad get ready for his long trip. I write colorful letters--forward, backward, upside down--on the folded wings of the paper plane I've been saving for Asha. I tuck it into Dad's suitcase."

"Bringing Asha Home" is a beautiful adoption story from a brother's point of view. Jamel Akib's illustrations are warm, friendly, and accessible. I hope that "Bringing Asha Home" will be read outside the adoption community, however, because it's a universal story about the hopes of a boy and his family.

"Bringing Asha Home" is great read-aloud choice for children ages 4-9.

Nicely written

We read this book to our 2-year-old. He got very interested, especially that part of the story is making paper airplanes. :) Well, whatever helps. What was important to us was that the book provided a nice perspective on adoption.

This lighthearted memoir chronicles the author's move from Iran to America in 1971 at age seven, the antics of her extended family and her eventual marriage to a Frenchman. The best parts will make readers laugh out loud, as when she arrives in Newport Beach, Calif., "a place where one's tan is a legitimate topic of conversation." She is particularly good making gentle fun of her father, who loves Disneyland and once competed on the game show Bowling for Dollars. Many of the book's jokes, though, are groan inducing, as in, "the only culture that my father was interested in was the kind in yogurt." And the book is off-kilter structurally. After beginning with a string of amusing anecdotes from her family's first years stateside, one five-page chapter lurches from seventh grade in California to an ever so brief mention of the Iranian revolution, and then back to California, college and meeting her husband. In addition, while politics are understandably not Dumas's topic, the way she skates over the subject can seem disingenuous. Following the revolution, did her father really turn down the jobs offered to him in Iran only because "none were within his field of interest"? Despite unevenness, Dumas's first book remains a warm, witty and sometimes poignant look at cross-cultural misunderstanding and family life. Immigrants from anywhere are likely to identify with her chronicle of adapting to America.

Adult/High School-Dumas first came to the U.S. from Iran in the early '70s when her father was sent to California on a two-year contract from the National Iranian Oil Company. Her family soon discovered that his presumed skill in English was basically limited to "vectors, surface tension and fluid mechanics." In short, humorous vignettes, the author recounts their resulting difficulties and Americans' almost total ignorance of Iran, illustrating the kindness of people and her father's absolute love of this country. After a brief return to Iran, they came back. This time, however, they were mistrusted and vilified, as a result of the Iranian hostage crisis. Her father lost his job and was forced to sell most of their possessions. Even this harsh treatment didn't diminish his love for the U.S., and they later reestablished themselves, though with a lower standard of living. Throughout, Dumas writes with a light touch, even when, after having been flown to DC by the state department to welcome the shah, they faced death threats and had to leave town. Her descriptions of American culture and her experiences with school, TV, and language (she was once called "Fritzy DumbAss" by a receptionist) could be the observations of anyone new to this country, and her humor allows natives and nonnatives alike to look at America with new insight.

She and her family spent much of their time correcting misconceptions about Iran--no, it's not in the Sahara; no, they didn't live in a tent; and no, they didn't own camels. After the Iranian revolution, the attitude of Americans changed, and Dumas and her family faced downright hostility from formerly friendly Americans. Her father even lost his job. She saw American conjecturing work in a very different way after she met her French husband-to-be, Francois, who was assumed to be cultured and well read. Delightful

I found this book after some research for one of my reading challenges. It is wonderful! I am not sure what I expected - it is a memoir of a young Iranian girl, transplanted to the US prior to the revolution, her life and her family's life from then until now as a married mother, a writer. It is really a collection of vignettes of her extended family (which is huge!) and her parents. It is warm and delightful. And VERY funny! I love her sense of humor. And I love the knowledge and the gentle shouldering that she has so wisely imparted in her funny way. I highly recommend reading this

Good summer read

Parts of this book are laugh-out-loud, tears-in-your-eyes funny. It's worth reading as a painless and not at all pedantic introduction to a culture that most Americans knew little or nothing about until the Iranian hostage crisis, and then our scope was limited to the ayatollahs. The sobering thought comes upon reflection of how different the immigrant experience has become. There is a lot of insight under the humor but it's not patronizing to either Iranians or Americans.

Funny in Any Language!

This book is about an Iranian American family, but the warmth and humor make it about everyone's families. We all have that make family member who thinks he can fix anything. If you're lucky, you might even have two: one to do the fixing, the other to criticize and say, "You should have used duct tape." Sit back, relax, and laugh out loud. Repeat until finished, which won't take long. :)

"Automating with S7...STL/SCL" is a reference book for any EXPERT programmer using Siemens S7 PLCs. Hans Berger, the author, is the "father" of S7 PLC family (in a technical way). If you want to reach the EXPERT level, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK!!! On the other side, if you know you will stay to ladder logic level at least 95% of the time (or, you "know and use / program" ten types of PLCs, ten types of drives, etc) then, YOU DON'T NEED THIS BOOK!

This book cover the most important tools, that Simatic Manager offers. The autor first starts with the basic concepts about the programmable controller like the process image, for update the inputs and outputs, and automation networks. The book covers the most important information about Stament List languaje that is more efficient that the ladder lenguaje and it can be very important for systems that have critical time tasks. The autor explains how the interruptions are configured and how each function is called inside the organization blocks. For people that work with PC of SIEMENS is the book that they need for consult some fundations, Actually i am developing a Tesis about Monitoring and Diagnosis Automation Systems with the Simatic Controllers at this book is my reference about the controllers (the autor explain the service of communication, one concept that many engineers dont know that exist). I am waiting the next book of the S7-1200 of Hans but in english please, i dont know german.

She needs a hero - Very highly recommended

Search and rescue medic John Maitland found her clad in nothing more than street cloths at nine thousand feet in January. A cross-country skier had spotted her, resulting in a call to the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue team. When she pulls a gun on him, John reminds himself that hypothermia can cause mental confusion. He doesn't yet see the bruises on her arms - or around her neck.
When the redhead wakes in the hospital, she suffers from amnesia. A scrap of paper in her pocket provides her only identification, Hannah. While she might not recall her name, family, or that she's pregnant, Hannah does recall a sense of danger. A fact confirmed when she's dismissed from the hospital to go to a shelter. As John drives her there, an SUV tries to run them off the road at a curve over a dangerous ravine.
Hannah must discover her identity and the father of her baby. Somewhere in her forgotten past lurks the key to life - or death. Give me more!

I don't usually read the smaller romance novels, but I was looking for something to read and picked up A Hero To Hold in the supermarket. All I can say is WOW! The action starts on the first page when the heroine is rescued off the face of a cliff by the hero who is a search and rescue medic and is lowered from a helicopter. Ms. Castillo did a superb job with the romance as well as the suspense and kept me thoroughly entertained. I finished the book this morning just as my husband was getting up to go to work! If you like lots of adventure and too-hot-to-handle romance, try one of Ms. Castillo's books.

Fantastic Book.

This is one of her older books but as usual it is a good one.
The characters are great and the hero is as usual a rock. The woman is a independent sort and they sizzle together. If you like romance and action. you will like this book.

About the Author
Donald Guthrie (1915-1992) was a graduate of the University of London (B.D., Th.M., Ph.D.). From 1949 until his retirement in 1982 Guthrie was lecturer in New Testament studies at London Bible College, and from 1978 until 1982 he also served as vice principal of the college. His books include New Testament Introduction, New Testament Theology, and the Tyndale New Testament Commentaries on the Pastoral Epistles and Hebrews.

Excellent Companion to Guthrie's Introduction

Donald Guthrie's NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY is a solid presentation of NT theology from a very conservative perspective. Most NT theologies have separate sections on each NT author. Guthrie's book proceeds topically. This approach is justified by the Guthrie's view that the "revelation cannot be contradictory." The results are quite conservative (Guthrie opposes women in ministry for example) and there is a considerable effort to harmonize the divergent strains of NT thought contra writers such as Dunn.

This book is amazingly comprehensive. It is over 1000 pages and contains chapters on ethics (personal & social) and biblical inspiration. The discussion of Jesus' view of the Old Testament is several pages alone.

Like Guthrie's NEW TESTAMENT INTRODUCTION, this is not one of the first books you want to read if you starting out to study the NT. Leon Morris' book of the same name is a more manageable introduction of about a third the length.

Imbued With A Sense Of Redemptive Purpose

Immutable is a word Donald Guthrie knew well, for here is a theology that is irreducible, able to withstand adversarial onslaught, showing no signs of aging, never self-indulgent, unambitious - and most certainly not shallow. 'No New Testament theology is on a solid foundation if it rests on the changing position of NT hypotheses.' p 42 The sheer dynamism and wisdom he imparts is able to gravitate those with doubts and misgivings, to belief. Irregardless of the irremediable wolves in sheep's clothing, the sheep may yet come, bidden and welcome, to the Shepherd of the flock, by a theology so wholeheartedly pure.

The plight of modern theologians is desperate, adrift of the Word, impassive and indifferent to public outcry, their questionable teachings soul-destroying, all the while oblivious to obligation, and in the worst cases guilty of coarse obstruction of the truth, primarily because of their unheeding presumption. Not so Donald Guthrie. A culmination of a lifetime of faithful study indeed, beyond all question.

Take for instance his topical presentation of The Future, with regard to the second advent, the resurrection, the afterlife, judgment and heaven - and the sine qua non, hell. Interspersed with insertions, page long 'notes' :

NOTE ON THE RAPTURE - p 845
'The view that Jews will have special opportunities to be evangelized through fellow Jews is without foundation; for the New Testament knows only one gospel, the gospel of the grace of God through Jesus Christ.'
NOTE ON THE CONSUMMATION OF THE KINGDOM - p 868
'Our understanding of the kingdom theme will be affected by our understanding of the millennium.'
NOTE ON THE MILLENNIUM - p 869
'Since this is mentioned only in Revelations 20 and nowhere else in the New Testament, a caution over its application must at once be raised. It must be borne in mind that the context is a symbolic setting, which means that it cannot be used to provide a key to the interpretation of passages which are symbolic.'

The footnotes are lavish, giving testimony to the arduous labor involved. Many times there the truth transpires, e.g. a stoical footnote (p 835) from a New Perspective pundit:

'JDG Dunn, Jesus & the Spirit: A Study of the Religious and Charismatic Experience of Jesus & the First Christians as Reflected in the New Testament p 334, suggests that what Paul meant is that only those who suffer Christ's death will attain to resurrection, since only Christ's death has resulted in resurrection.'

Another footnote amply demonstrates the perpetuation of a wrong doctrine clamoring for attention in an attempt to reconfigure the gospel, the point taken from the wrong-headed 'Jesus & the Revolutionaries': 'Oscar Cullmann suggests that Jesus' teaching must be adapted, because modern man does not think in terms of an imminent end of the world (p 52). His idea of what that adaptation must involve is that reform or social structures must go hand in hand with individual conversions. But the question arises whether this adaptation remains true to the radical character of Jesus' teaching.' p 425

Guthrie's study on the kingdom of God and the supernatural activities that accompanied its inauguration bears close resemblance to, and makes frequent reference to Herman Ridderbos. '...it is advisable before considering the evidence to bear in mind that the term does not refer to the establishment of a messianic political kingdom.' p 410 'The kingdom, as Ridderbos remarked, is 'absolutely transcendent in its origin, it is the revelation of God's glory.' p 420 Impressing through one parable with incredible theological insight, Guthrie wrote: 'Some difficulty surrounds the interpretation of the parable of leaven (Matt 13:33; Luke 13:20) since leaven normally has a bad connotation when used metaphorically (as in "the leaven of the Pharisees"), but it serves as an apt illustration of the imperceptible character of the coming of the kingdom. It was present in a dynamic activity, but few realized that it was there. Some have taken the parable to mean that the kingdom will work imperceptibly until it permeates the whole of society, in which case the world will become identical with the kingdom. This, however, presses a detail of the parable in a way which was not intended. The main lesson is that complete results may be obtained by inconspicuous methods - a very different approach from the contemporary tactics of the zealots.' p 424 This remarkable emphasis upon divine mercy is always made abundantly clear by Guthrie.

Professor Guthrie's views are unimpeachable, reflecting a maturity few attain to. A bibliography, index of authors, index of subjects, and index of references are witness to his extensive research and his concluding comments testify to his sure footing, remaining sound in the pursuit of theological truth.

Intensely mediocre!

Although I appreciate Guthries commitment to conservative Christianity and his unwillingness to be influenced by many of the liberal scholars currently involved in New Testament studies, Guthrie's style of writing is hard to stick with. The work is comprehensive and, on the essentials of the faith, orthodox, but stylistically boring. However, Guthrie's unique approach to seeing what the Bible has to say about different doctrines by tracing them through New Testament thought makes it worthwhile for learning and understanding, difficult style of writing notwithstanding.
