Depression era Albany comes alive in three stunning novels.

In the author's "Prelude in a Saloon," published as the preface of this trilogy, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist William Kennedy portrays himself as Daniel Quinn, nephew of Billy Phelan (of Billy Phelan's Greatest Game) and grandson of Francis Phelan (of Ironweed), as he begins an interview with an old gangster who worked closely with Jack "Legs" Diamond (of Legs). With tongue-in-cheek humor, Quinn/Kennedy reveals how his writing career began and how he came to know the main characters of this trio of books set in Depression-era Albany, New York.

Legs, set in 1930 - 1931, is a fictional biography of Jack "Legs" Diamond, thief/bootlegger/murderer, a man who lived the high life and who double-crossed and cheated his way to success, controlling speakeasies, illegal alcohol, real estate, and gambling, a man who survived eleven bullets in three separate assassination attempts before finally being brought down. An uncomplicated but well-written and often violent novel, Legs sets the scene for Billy Phelan's Greatest Game and Ironweed, both set in 1938. (4 stars)

Billy Phelan's Greatest Game is far more sophisticated, with more fully drawn characters, well-developed suspense, and themes dealing with fathers and sons and their values--intergenerational problems which reveal the changing morality of Depression-era Albany. Billy Phelan, part-time bookie and small-time card player and gambler is asked to monitor the activities of one of his fellow-card players, suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of Charlie MacCall, son and nephew of the two men running the political machine of Albany. Remaining true to his own values, Billy is surprised when his father Francis Phelan, who has just reappeared after abandoning the family twenty-two years before, suggests cooperating. (5 stars)

Vargas, a longtime corporate and community consultant, approaches social activism with high ideals, a positive viewpoint and, most helpfully, a practical and gratifying plan of action, based in his personal experience and cultural heritage. The "Familia Approach" treats activism not as a solo enterprise but as "a way of living so as to teach love and activate the positive power of our families and communities." Vargas unpacks the Mexican idea of familia and finds enfolded within its notion of the extended family-"everyone you care for and who cares for you"-the American passion for social activism. Each chapter expands on this idea, including reflection questions and bullet-point "practices," with much insight into Vargas's own family and Latino culture in general (both modern and ancient). Though not religious, Vargas is "spiritual," and does consider prayer and indigenous religious practices (like unity circles) important and powerful. Equally important, however, is real human understanding, for which he introduces the surprisingly complex concept of conocimento-conversation meant to deepen participants' knowledge of each other. Vargas's text, full of new agisms like "transformation," "energy" and "synergy," will strike some readers as redundant, but those ready to share in Vargas's passion will find much to learn.

Roberto Vargas, principal consultant for New World Associates, is an educator, planning consultant, and ceremony leader. Nationally recognized for his skills in meeting facilitation and leadership development, Roberto has more than twenty-five years of experience providing consultations on community problem-solving, multicultural team-building, and strategic planning throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Sweden. His focus is assisting proactive organizations to become their best, and his clients have included colleges, corporations, public institutions, Native American reservations, and more than 150 agencies and organizations dedicated to community service. A must read for creating a heathly and engaged family

Have you ever struggled to find a way to make family gatherings meaningful, nurturing and inspiring? Read this book and you will struggle no longer!!!

Family Activism is perhaps one of the best books I have ever read that provides strategies, tool and proven methodolgies for creating healthy and engaged families. The power of the talking stick is one wonderful tool for creating powerful and authentic conversations for birthday celebrations, weddings, baptisms, graduations and other venues where you bring family members togethers in a meaningful and inspiring way.

I also enjoyed learning more about how the process for creating great families can be used in the corporate and public sectors. I was inspired to learn how Dr. Vargas has taken these tools to many corporate environments and has introduced a mechanism to help leaders engage their teams in powerful ways. Dr. Vargas also shared how the tools of family activism can generate authentic, honest and real sharing which leads to greater familiarity, trust, unity and eventually greater results.

I believe this is a must read for anyone interested in investing in a nurturing family, a great community and engaging great teams. What a treasure and again a must read if we are to create a better world, beginning with family and friends!

As an activist, my passion is to improve the quality of life for our communities and strengthen our diverse democracy. This requires a lifetime of work and one needs a strong support structure to face new challenges each day. This book's premise is that positive social change also begins with one's family and close relationships. Creating a healthy family circle enriches ourselves and further propels us to live out our purpose. The author provides simple tools and perspectives that if implemented, can create safe family dialogues that validate our different opinions and honor each other. I can see myself using some of these tools, such as establishing a family council with my mom, uncle and grandfather. I will also buy my good friend, who is a new dad in Oakland, a copy for his new family.

Vargas reminds us that the personal IS in fact political and that social and global transformation begins with the transformation of our interpersonal relationships, as family, community, and peers.

This book is filled with rich and compelling examples from from the authors own life as well as insightful reflections.

I highly recommend it.

The story of how Alfred Stieglitz's shifting band of merry ex-pats and homegrown experimenters invented American modernism has been oft and well told, but never with Corn's combination of lucidity, subtlety and clear-eyed sympathy with the workAand the jingoistic America from which it emerged. Corn looks at the work of five American artists, dividing them into the "Transatlantics" and the "Rooted." Like Duchamp and Picabia (who paved the way with "Am?ricanisme"), two other "transatlantics," Gerald Murphy and Joseph Stella, thought that America provided the perfect context for a machine-age art. For Corn, Stella's heroic stylizations of Manhattan's newly built skyscrapers are an attempt to paint through "the European's highly reductive schema of New York," and get at its relentless modernity. The brash flatness of American billboards appears in Murphy's work in Paris, and in that of the "rooted" Demuth, who because of delicate health lived in Pennsylvania. Unlike Demuth, two other "rooted" artists, Corn argues, tried to recover a more historical understanding of what American art wasAGeorgia O'Keeffe looked to a Native American past in New Mexico, and Charles Sheeler incorporated vernacular elements like Shaker furniture into his canvases. Corn matches a terrific sensitivity to form with a winning curiosity about the artists' biographies and nods to period criticism. While a sense of broader social processes shaping artistic production (and the American public) doesn't really come through, Corn's nuanced descriptions of the individual artists, their lives and their materials mirror perfectly their search for "American" modes of expression. Keying off a phrase by Georgia O'Keeffe regarding the "Americanness of American culture and life," art historian Corn (Stanford Univ.) probes the European roots of interwar American modernism in six chapters, each organized around a single work of art. In Part 1, "The Transatlantics," she demonstrates the cultural dynamism between Paris and New York through analyses of representative work by Duchamp, Gerald Murphy, and Joseph Stella. Part 2, "The Rooted," extends urban art synergy to American regionalism as manifest in works from the late 1920s and early 1930s by Charles Demuth, O'Keeffe, and Charles Sheeler. Although deeply formalistic, Corn's analysis moves successfully beyond individual paintings to explore the artistic, historic, and cultural milieu surrounding each artist. enlightening but a little incomplete

Wanda Corn's book is the most extensive atttempt to put early modern art in the United States into its social, historical, and cultural context. In doing this, it has little competition. Most books in this field have been monographic studies of style--in other words mostly formalist analyses purely and totally. It is fortunate that Corn makes the central thesis of her book quite clear in the introduction and first chapter. She believes that there are connections between style and culture and she is determined to connect the visual with the social-historical meanings it often conveys.
Corn has done an enormous amount of research for this book and she provides many new insights. She connects the art to the time and place of creation with insight, enthusiasm and a lot of evidence to back up her opinions and observations. She even identifies, describes and traces the cultural roots of a distinctly American aesthetic in early modern painting that she labels "billboard cubism." The book is structured with a long introduction, six chapters in which a single work by one artist is the focus (although many other works are discussed along the way) and an epilogue to trace how the issues at hand evolved after the period of time covered in this book.
The book has some problems. The basic structure of the book as a series of case studies is somewhat off-putting. It is not clear how relevant the author's arguments focused on six works by six very different artists are to the breadth of art produced at this time. Her decision to make Gerald Murphy and not Stuart Davis the focus of one chapter is perplexing. Davis is much better known, he was more prolific, and there is more literature (although still not enough to answer some enduring questions) on him. The first chapter, on Duchamp's Fountain, tends to become somewhat unfocused as the author casts her perspective on the work's context a little too wide.
All in all, an attractive book with lovely reproductions that is highly informative. Recommended strongly for students of American art and history.

Informative, but maybe not Corn's strongest work

I love Wanda Corn's writing and this ambitious book was no exception, though the overall concept of this book fell a little flat for me. I am used to reading her scholarly articles and other shorter works which tend to be tied together a little stronger. She is an expert on Regionalism and public works, and I used several of her works in my research for both my undergraduate and graduate theses. I still enjoyed this book, but wish the theme was more present throughout the book. More examples would have definitely helped make a case for defining 'Americanness," but it is such a difficult 'thing' to define that I am not sure any author could do it completely.

Amazing and Inspirational Book

I found this book to be an absolutely amazing book. As someone who suffers from anxiety, although not nearly as intense, and wants to travel this book is a great inspiration to get out there and conquer my fears. The simple yet descriptive story telling kept things on an accessible level that had me reading from the start.

I actually picked this book up after looking on whatsdavedoing.com, a blog that Dave, one of the characters runs. I bought it on complete impulse and was quite happy I did. I powered through it in under a week, it was hard to put down!

The crazy things that happened in this book are all learning experiences and I hope to have a couple when i'm done. I have seen some people complain that this book is only for 20 somethings that don't have any responsibilities. I think those people are just jealous that they never took the first step to having an exciting life and settled and are taking it out on the poor author.

Also, this book is for 20 somethings. Its kind of who it was written for, its weird to hear a complaint for a books audience. That'd be like me, a computer scientist, picking up a book on medicine and complaining that this book will only interest medical professionals. Well duh, that's what it was written for!

Overall I thought this book was amazing and incredibly inspirational for anyone who is trying to get over their anxiety or just wants to expand their horizons and travel the world. Thanks for writing the book Ms. Juliff.

All the Juicy stories of mishap whilst traveling

The writing was well done and the first few sentences captured my attention. Solo Travel and just travel in general is of interest to me but not only the places, instead I love listening the stories and there were a good number of them in this book. I do recommend it as a good read, but beware it is not a "travel book" in the sense that it is not going to give pointers on travel - it's just the juicy, cringe-worthy, mishap stories that keep you shaking your head whilst reading.

A quick and enjoyable read.

I liked how this book is not "how-to", rather it's a book about the adventures that find you and memories you make while traveling (both good and bad). It also made me want to experience Southeast Asia for myself, a place I'd never seriously considered going before reading this. I hope that someday there will be a second book as it left me wanting more.
