After racing boats for 30 years (as this reviewer has), one feels that there is little new to be learned. However, as sailor Connor says himself, he learned something by writing this book. While Connor uses many personal illustrative examples, he does not seem intent on glorifying himself, and indeed his recommendations are often valuable. He covers all aspects of sailboat racing (e.g., sails, wind conditions, rig tuning), and concludes with a chapter on competing in the race itself. Many good diagrams and drawings help interpret the written material. Highly recommended for all libraries with a sailing/racing clientele.

Well written, smooth reading but not advanced

I found the first chapter too egocentric: Dennis Conner explains that he is a good sailor, and that we have a lot to learn from him. The rest of the book is smooth reading and very well written. I had expected the book to be advanced, but the book seems to be very targeted at the beginner. Still, there is much useful information in the book.
In my mind, the book has four main parts: Part 1: boat design and building (including sails) is basic, but written in a way that makes it enjoyable to read. It is invaluable to anyone who without prior knowledge wants to buy a good boat. Part 2: boat handling and maneuvers is mainly for the novice. If you have been racing there is probably not much new here. Still the style of writing is good, and the checklists are easy to understand and follow. Part 3: strategy, is a good part. However, if you have attended a Smart Course by North Sails (or read their book) you will not find anything new here. Part 4: rules and tactics: Nothing really exciting here. The rules are old by now, and the tactics are the ones you learned in sailing school as a kid.
If you are about to enter your first boat, this is the book for you. However, if you have won a few Wednesday night club races you will probably ask for more advanced stuff than what you find in this book. A champion like Dennis Conner should be able to write a book that is much more advanced and thus more valuable than this book.

An advice from a legend...

Sailing like a champion is an excellent composed book. Each case is described using at least one of the author's real-life events and is written in a plain and uncomplicated way. But what fascinated me the most is not the theory of the sail trim (which is by all means one of the best) but the unmatched dedication of Dennis Conner and his unrivaled desire to win. Aa advice from a living legend..., Thank you DC!

A must for any sailors library.

Mr Connor explains everything a sailor needs to know to satisfy his/her desire to race or cruise to the best of his/her ability. He does it by also explaining the jargon that stiffles most books on the subject, making them hard to read or follow. Unless, of course, if you were born with a "silver tiller" in your hand.

Excellent - for the right audience

If you've been in testing long, you've probably heard the standard impossible questions:

"Why didn't you find that?"
"Why would we hire a human to test when we can automate our testing?"
"This NEEDS TO WORK. And we need it next week. Period"

If you drank the deep draught of testing, if you've struggled with it, wrestled with it, and gotten good at it, I have only one thing to say:

This probably ain't the book for you.

This book is for the people who are asking you the impossible questions.

Seriously. This is a nice evening read and will provide an executive, manger, or developer with enough information about testing to (A) understand some of the challenges of the role, (B) set appropriate expectations, and (C) communicate those expectations clearly.

In other words, it can be the difference between a sane life and an insane one - if only you can get the right people to read it.

Now, the style of the book is plain prose and folsky story - it's the kind of thing you can read in an comfortable evening, or perhaps, two. It doesn't have fancy metrics and graphs, but we all know what Mark Twain said about that.

So if you are a seasoned tester, this book might not be for you - it's for your boss, your bosses boss, the customer, the CEO, and The New Guy. I wanted to get my management team the book as a Christmas present, but somehow all those folks had read it before Christmas ... I suspect a co-worker.

Absolutely great for it's niche. Top Flight. Buy two copies to give away today!

Things to consider

I know Jerry Weinberg. I like him, treasure his advice, and have read and liked many of his books. This is another of his books that I like.

Jerry writes around testing software. I say "around" instead of "about" because this book isn't about the technical aspects of testing software. I find it to be about the personal and thoughtful aspects of testing software. More importantly, it is about information - communicating, considering, and applying information.

This all starts with Jerry's definition of Testing a System:

a process of gathering information about it with the intent that the information could be used for some purpose.

Aha! Gathering information that we can use. I agree. I have often pleaded with people on projects to understand this about testing.

I don't know how often I have heard screams of, "The test failed! The test failed!"

No, the test didn't fail. We learned something from the test, so it was a success. Perhaps you were disappointed by what you learned from the test, but the test didn't fail.

This is why I love Weinberg's book about testing. Its contents will last beyond the current and next three generations of test tools and techniques. It cuts to the heart of testing in a timeless manner.

Simple, right? Wrong. The second half of the testing definition is about using the information, and people use the information. Now we come to a huge hurdle. "Information is power." Some people crave information, and many people fear it, even to the point of hiding it or lying about it.

Weinberg discusses the fear at length, how to spot the fear, and how to work with the people who are afraid.

Yes, I recommend this book. I can give it to a manager at any level and trust that if they read it, they have the potential to be a much better manager. I can give the book to just about anyone - especially people who have nothing to do with software or testing software. It contains much about how people gather, communicate, consider, and use information.

Jonathan D. Kibble, PhD, has taught at the University of Sheffield Medical School and at St. George's University (Grenada). Most recently he taught physiology at The Memorial University of Newfoundland, where, in addition to serving as the physiology course director, he did research in renal physiology and active learning methods. Great physiology review book!

I highly recommend this physiology review book! It is well written, easy to follow, and has high quality images and illustration. I used it to augment my physiology textbook in my 1st year of med school, and as a review source in my 2nd year for nearly every module. The chapters are condensed with high yield information and short clinical vignettes. I have several physio review books; I like this one the best.

I really like this book, because it provides exactly what it says: the big picture for physiology. I find it very student friendly and it got me through physiology in medical school just fine. If you want to go in depth, this is probably not enough for you. The chapters have great clinical correlates for every main concept. It also has great graphics and empty space for your notes. Would highly recommend it! Good refresher for Step 1.

About the Author

Frank Mayer is cofounder and Chief Technology Officer of Tresys Technology, and has 23 years of experience in the design, development, and analysis of secure operating systems. He has been an active contributor to SELinux for six years, and has initiated and participated in the development of many new SELinux innovations and tools. He also chairs the annual SELinux Symposium. Frank has published many papers on secure and trustworthy operating systems, and has also explored security in parallel computing, networks, and enterprise applications.

Karl MacMillan is an active contributor in the SELinux community and has led the development of many important SELinux features. He is also a sought after speaker and consultant, and has helped many individuals and organizations understand and apply strong computer security with SELinux. Previous to his work on SELinux, Karl made important contributions in the fields of pattern recognition and evolutionary computing as applied to document and audio recognition, where he has numerous published papers.

David Caplan is a senior security engineer at Tresys Technology with over 20 years of experience in computer security and a wide range of other programming- and software-related areas. He has worked with SELinux for six years as a contributor to many of the SELinux-related open source projects and has led multiple efforts in analyzing and constructing SELinux policy for a variety of systems.

Great grounding but going out of date quickly

SELinux by Example is not my first venture into learning about SELinux, but in fact my second. My first was the study guide for the RedHat SELinux Exam (which you only get if you pay for the course, so i realise it is not a cheap option). While the Red Hat material is very limited (to be covered in 4 days and with the aim of preparing you for an exam) it has three gleaming advantages:
1) it is current
2) the exercises are practical and come with solution in the book; and
3) there are nowhere near as many mistakes.

So let's cut to the downsides of this book:
1) it's dated (now in 2008)
2) there are mistakes, many mistakes but thankfully most are obvious
3) there are no easily accessible answers. They might be online, but so far i have not found them...

So that sounds pretty bad, but actually the book is very good, mainly because of its depth. It seems to go through the entire beast that is SELinux, using non-contrived examples of policy. Unfortunately it does not help you in administering your system all that much (though there is a chapter devoted to this). The reason for this is simple: this book aims to tell you how SELinux works, rather than how to use it. In other words, this book needs to be read together with something more practical. The practical content of the book is probably confined to the last two chapters which amounts to just shy of 70 pages out of 425 including index.

Honestly, i am torn on this: on the one hand i'm disappointed about how out of date the book has gotten, and how quickly, but at the same time i understand: SELinux is still evolving significantly AND how distro's are using it is still evolving. Just see some of the references where the book acknowledges its shortcomings: The authors know where things are headed, they know their stuff. Which on the other side of the spectrum is why this book is so good as an introduction: you cover everything, you have a really solid background of the area, but you are left wanting more, you are left wanting ... well >practical< examples, rather than the examples in the text.

I would recommend that anyone wanting to get into using SELinux get material of their distro's support site (Red Hat / Fedora have guides and links to other materials which are excellent and free) and use those materials with this book. I have yet to find a source that ties all of SELinux together so well, but at the same time, there is the sensation that this material will need a revision very soon.

One last issue is that the book is a little too formulaic. The text will inform you there is a summary of syntax on page X, where X is the page you are on and the summary is the next paragraph. It just rubs me the wrong way, it is pointing out the obvious, it is adding volume where none is needed. The text is concise, but for some reason it seems the authors want to add bloat and volume when otherwise they get right to the point.

In conclusion, consider this book a foundation, even if its not as current as you might want (and those issues are related more to module based policy writing which is covered in sufficient depths, especially because examples are included with your SELinux policy anyway), and read it with the man pages and the documentation you get with your distro and you'll be fine.

is it germane to your usage of linux?

If you are a linux or unix user, then you're probably pretty familiar with the permissions settings on files. It's a basic methodology that is essentially unchanged over 20 years or more or unix development. But its shortcomings have been just as well known to unix experts over that time.

What Mayer et al demonstrate is that the latest linux 2.6 has a very interesting add-on. SELinux. It is incorporated by default. So if you're running linux 2.6, it's been present all along, hidden in the background. The book describes what it offers. A vastly improved and very granular security model. Based on the concept of type enforcement. It goes way beyond earlier implementations of Mandatory Access Control.

The book can be heavy sledding if all this is new to you. Luckily, it describes a neat GUI tool, apol, that you can run as root. It can greatly assist understanding the use and making of rules.

Most users and sysadmins of linux machines might still not require the active use of SELinux. There is a considerable investment in time needed, to understand and use it. Plus, most of the examples cited in the book refer to government or classified contexts. Outside these, you have to really ask yourself if it's germane to you.

Not well written

I'm about a hundred pages into the book. I am still completely confused. If this book was intended to describe SELinux "by Example" it certainly hasn't. Furthermore, it seems to be a bit out of date, focusing on old distributions like Fedora Core 5. It appears to place a lot of focus on more obscure tools (written by the author and the author's company) as opposed to the more "standard" tools which are included in standard distributions.

Life aboard a cold war boomer

I too was stationed on the Casimir Pulaski though not at the same time as the author. I found Mr. Jaskoviak to be very knowledgeable about life aboard the Pulaski and really enjoyed the book. More than that, the book is an important read for all Americans because the sailors that manned those boats really helped to end the Cold War in our favor and helped to avert a nuclear armageddon. The contribution to our freedom and safety that those sailors made must never be forgotten and this book will help future generations to never forget them.

Life Aboard the Crazy Polack? If you're looking for a book about submarine life, very little is written here. Much written of family history and 1960's social changes.

Apparently self-published, it is significantly better written than "Tales From Da Bronx Submariner," but editing was little more than spellcheck. There are numerous technical inaccuracies that I attribute to the time lapse of the author's memory. A review by another submariner may have revealed that there was only one LiBr, that Pulaski was depth restricted during the time frame of this work (not made Sub-Safe until subsequent overhaul thus never reached the depths written), and clear up confusion between Norwich & Norwalk as well as the geography of Charleston Harbor. There are many many more, but you get the idea.

Nit picking? Yeah, but I paralleled the writer's experience on sister ship Von Steuben (SSBN 632) during this time, leaving Rota & the shipyard overhaul in Groton a few months ahead. I subsequently served on Pulaski in the 1980s.

Interesting Read - Great Book!

As a fan of contemporary and military history, I am always looking for something new and different to read. This book is both. It's a first-person narrative that combines history and personal recollections to tell a very unique story. The author takes us through a tale of family highs and lows, youth, and military service during the Cold War. What makes this book particularly interesting is the author's participation in the often overlooked and underappreciated U.S. Navy's "Silent Service."

About the Author
Thom Shea served 23 years with distinguished Valor as a Navy SEAL. During his military career he served in three wars, ultimately leading a team of Navy SEALs into Afghanistan in 2009 where he earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, Army Commendation with Valor and his second Combat Action Medal. Shea is also the CEO of Adamantine Alliance, a leadership and human performance coaching organization. He now resides in Greenville, South Carolina, with his wife Stacy and three children.

Not just a collection of war stories....

I should start off by saying what this book isn't....

It's not slick. It's not like Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor. It's not Chris Kyle's American Sniper. And it's not definitely not Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior. Each of those was penned in part by others. (Patrick Robinson, Jim DeFelice and John Weisman respectively.) And yes, they are all fine books.

No, Thom Shea's Unbreakable was clearly written by the man himself.

It's a personal memoir, a "letter" to his children in case he didn't return home from battling America's enemies.

It must have been incredibly difficult to write. What does a father want to convey to his son about being a man? What does he want to tell his daughter about being a woman, wife and mother? How does he convey why his sacrificing his life with them was not just a selfish act, but one of love for his family, friends and Nation?

When reading, you can get the sense that the book was compiled from Thom's writing on bits of paper while riding in the back of a cargo plane or email's back home ,from a dusty base in some godforsaken land.

It's why I started by saying the book isn't slick. (It's also why it got four stars from me, and not five - it could have had tighter editing.)

But what it is is honest.

In an age where warriors are no longer glorified, but looked down upon by the politically correct, this book will be hard for them to read. The truth is, after all, a bitter pill to swallow. And the truth is, we need hard men - warriors - to do bad things to bad people.

To read Unbreakable is to get to know who Thom Shea is. A warrior.

A little less detail.

My biggest gripe is the content in the book that is just ridiculously repetitive. Also, this book is written for his kids. I have no problem what so ever of him talking about whacking hajis. Hell, that's what SEALs do. I loved reading about that.

My problem is the excessive amount of times he talks about wanting to bang his wife. In all honesty, if I'm one of his kids, I wouldn't be chomping at the bit to read a book where my dad talks about plowing my mom more than 10 times in the first 200 pgs. I get he loves his wife and how her connection to him helped him as a SEAL but come on.
