I was surprised to receive the original! It was in good condition! The play, itself is hilarious! This version's font was hard to read, but I have a modern version for reading. I enjoyed showing off this original to the directors of the play (and they used the pic of the set to help them come up with a concept to build our set :)

This simply the best curry book I have ever owned. It is well worth making the masalas yourself as it makes all the difference to your final flavour. Try the traditional lamb korma as an absolute winner every time. Shame it is out of print!

Dissapointing

No idea why this book gets the renown it has. I think it may have dated very badly and harks back to a time when nobody knew anything about Indian food.
After having made numerous dishes from the book I have been repeatedly disappointed. With few exceptions there is an incredible sameness to the flavour of many dishes produced. The culprit seems to be the garam masala recipe, which overwhelms everything whenever its used. The techniques and information provided are good, for actual recipes I'd look elsewhere.

I really enjoyed this book! I'm a sucker for anything close to the Hunger Games. And as other reviewers discribed this book, it is a journey book. The main character must travel through many different terrains (through mountains and the dessert) and face a lot of obstacles along the way (killer animals and cannibals). They only have a set amount of time to find her mother's killer and bring him back to the king before time runs out and the race is over. I thought it was action packed up until the race was over. There was nice character development and the female lead wasn't too strong or over the top know it all like so many other books.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. If you are a quick reader, it could be read in one day and I'm not so sure that there will be a sequel. It seemed to finish up by answering a lot of questions. But leads to more questions..... so who knows. I'm glad I bought it and have recommended it to others.

Parents - I try to read these YA books before I pass them on to my tweens. I was nervous when I saw that cannibals were a subject matter in this book. I don't believet here was ever too much mentioned to make it graphic or too gross but I'm not sure I'm ready to pass this on to my 10 yo yet just bc is seems pretty scary scenarios in the book of cannibals capturing people to eat later - YUCK! I don't remember it being too graphic anywhere else other than knife throwing and blood sqirting. No language problems.

I was disapointed

I really liked The Headhunter's Race when I first started reading it. I thought the premise was interesting, and the set up was good. The reading flowed easily and I was excited about it. Avene sounded like an awesome kick-ass strong heroine who is bent on revenge and freedom and will stop at nothing to get her chance.

About halfway through the book I started getting really bored. This is definitely a "journey book" and each time they kept back tracking or getting more survival issues or being kidnapped, it was just UGH enough already. I kept wanting the plot to move forward, but it didn't move forward fast enough for my tastes.

Then, I finished the book. That ending. I mean, really? Yes, in a way it is very epic, a devastating bombshell. BUT - and this is a spoiler sort of - I can't stand when books end just about as they started with no advancement!!!!! *deep breath* OK so I'm trying to not straight up give away the ending, but I don't know how to express my utter disappointment and my "so why did I just read a book where nothing really changed and the whole thing was pointless" feeling.

As for the characters, I did like them a bit. Avene was strong and determined, but flawed with her lack of trust. McCoy, well, I don't know if he is genuine or if he has ulterior motives, but he has been there helping Avene the entire time, whether she saw it or not. Their little maybe romance was sweet, but really under-developed. First she can't trust him, then she wants to kiss him, and there's not much in between, or after. I did like Zita, she seems like a great friend who really wants Avene to succeed and I think their partnership in the prison works well.

In conclusion, this is NOT my kind of book and that is why it got a low rating. I was expecting an exciting "race" with an epic conclusion, but what I got was not the conclusion I expected. I might be overreacting, others will probably enjoy the plot twist and I know not everyone hates "journey" books like I do. But it took me all month to finally finish this book and since I've had so little time to read with the move and all, I kind of wish I spent my time reading something else.

Time Scouts to the Rescue

A great adventure continues. Asprin and Evens agan have a story filled with action of a historical event. Never a dull moment. I read the story in one sitting enjoying every page. The reader is easly placed in the action through the verbal visualization of 19th century, Denver and the Time station. The continous twists and turns add flavor to the story. My only critizism is the epilog. I would like to have seen just a little more detail on what happened to charactors after their return.

Bad puns aside, I had to force myself to put this one down, in order to deal with necessities like work, food, sleep. This is the second half of the novel begun in "Ripping Time" and the climax(es) are superbly done.
These two books would make an absolutely rousing mini-series.

Overall I think it's a pretty decent textbook content wise. It could be organized a bit better. One shouldn't have to turn back 5 pages to review referenced illustrations and tables. Also the Excel appendicies steps should be revisited. I had to use YouTube for thorough step by step instructions. This was an overall issue with my classmates as well and I pointed them to the Youtube site and they found the instructions there much easier to follow for the assigned tasks.
