Weakest in the series but not a weak book itself
By R. Baker
I find most of the other reviews of this book spot on even if the accompanying ratings are a little harsh. The Remaining: Allegiance is definitely the weakest in this series. Spasms of action throughout the book feel natural within the narrative but unoriginal in the larger picture. The characters are physically spread out in this book to start, maybe a little too thin. While that might result in covering more ground to speed up the plot and/or more attention on character development, it feels like neither. Each group seems to deal with issues addressed in the previous books and each individual character in their own way, taking up a lot of pages for each and yet feeling like less time for everyone.
As the details of what was inevitable, as set up by the previous books -- unfold it seems somewhat methodical and redundant across each set of characters. While that time is spent on deepening character development, each dealing with their own piece of the situation doesn't go as far as it has before in dealing with the larger conflict (with the exception of LaRouche in this book).
Of course, for those invested in the series, don't skip over this one. I'm personally not deterred from reading the next. The writing is not as poor nor the book as much as disappointment as other reviews make it out to be by the number of stars. Not being up to snuff with previous works does not make it bad and the negativity has as much to do with raised expectations as this installment not quite hitting the mark.
Also like other reviewers, I'm also inclined to blame the publisher over the writer, and you can't fault Molles for reaping the benefits of success. I hope and trust the series finale is worth the longer walk this one took us on to get us there.

This Should Have Been Edited Down to Half of a Book
By Carlos Webster
Do you want a book that barely advances the narrative of the series?
Do you enjoy impossibly long and unnecessary interior monologues?
Are you looking for an installment in an otherwise great series that wastes word after word but costs five times as much as the previous books?
If so, this is the book for you!
With his first few books, Molles created the best zombie world I've read yet. Unfortunately, this installment advances the ball too little. I can't help but think that with the increased price and accelerated release schedule for the next one, the publisher is driving the series now, not the author. I feel like I am being milked.
There is too much exposition and inner-monologue. This writing style -- undoubtedly Molles has relied on inner-monologue from the beginning, but it feels more like page-filler now than important to the story -- ruins immersion. When one character asks another a question and two or three pages of inner monologue follow before the askee answers the question, I can't help but think, "hasn't there been an incredibly long, awkward silence?" and "did I really need to know that information?" About halfway through, I realized I could skip entire pages without losing anything. Molles must be under a deadline because he isn't showing us the world anymore, he's explaining it to us through tedious paragraphs of characters' thoughts.
This book disappointed me because I love the series. When writing the action sequences, Molles is terrific. He blends tactics and actions nicely (especially for a non-military person like me). That said, if I can expect the future books in this series to be as slow and poorly edited as this one, I will cut my losses now. It will be hard to let it go but I don't think it will be worth the time and (increasing) money.

So disappointing.
By Jonce
I love this series but Molles really missed the mark with this installment. The book could've been one-fourth the length if he'd taken out most of the useless internal dialogue. Very little action, not much advancement of the storyline at all and the fact that I paid 3 times as much for this one just capped off my disappointment in this book.
I never thought I'd say this about this series but this may be the last book I buy. I'll definitely read a sample of the next book before blindly deciding to pre-order like I did with Allegiance.
Authors decision to go mainstream = FAIL.
