A cavalcade of the medieval world within two classic novels of historical fiction
Despite his success with his famous fictional detective, Arthur Conan Doyle's first love was the historical novel and in his own estimation he wrote few better than the two collected together in this book. 'Sir Nigel' was actually written after 'The White Company,' but in the Leonaur edition it appears first since within it the reader is introduced to one of the principal characters of both novels-Sir Nigel Loring. The scene for these adventures is England and France in the 14th Century against a backdrop of The Hundred Years War. Young Nigel in service to his king, Edward III begins his career as a squire. It is the start a 'rites of passage' journey which will include the Black Prince among other notables of the period, skirmishes at sea and ultimately the monumental Battle of Poitiers. 'The White Company' continues Sir Nigel's story as once again he campaigns against the French, this time in company with a new young hero, Alleyne Edricson.

About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930.He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. His greatest achievement was his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr. Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction.

A review of the two AMAZING novels
By CJ
This review is focused on the novels themselves, rather than this particular edition. Regarding this edition, I will say only that I recommend reading "The White Company" first, as the work "Sir Nigel", written later, pre-supposes familiarity with the earlier work. That said, reading them in chronological order of events would not significantly take away from the experience.
Regarding the novels in general: these are amazing stories, and at the height of the military historical fiction genre. I found both to be absolutely spell-binding. Here are what I saw as the strengths:
- Level of historical detail and accuracy. I have taken a college course on medieval warfare, and have recently read several books aimed at dispelling popular myths about the medieval period. I was sometimes amazed that these novels showed perfect knowledge of this period, consistent with all of the latest historical works I have read on the subject. As an example, the novels address the complex and sometimes predatory nature of the relationship between the Abbeys and local landowners, or as another example, the novels explain the use of non-noble, non-knightly men-at-arms who were professional soldiers armed and equipped as knights, but not part of the same class. I read these books convinced that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle must have held a doctorate in medieval history. These books really help the reader to enter the time period and to better understand real historical events.
- Balance. If you're familiar with Bernard Cornwell's "Agincourt", you'll know the extreme degree to which work of historical fiction may go to dispel any romantic notion of a period and instead offer the brutal and gritty reality of it. I think The White Company and Sir Nigel offer a good balance between the romantic and the realistic. They do not overindulge in references to the filth and grime and wounds of war, but they also don't shy away from the fact that medieval warfare was violent and deadly.
- Characters and story. The novel is held together by the reader's concern for the well-developed characters, engaged in an enthralling story line. I recently read "The Black Arrow", and found the characters and story far less compelling (I would also note that the level and accuracy of historical detail is just not there in Black Arrow). The events described in these novels are very dramatic even when read in a history book, but when part of such a well-written story as this, they really grab you and don't let go.
I plan on buying this edition as a gift for my sons as they get older. As a student of military history, but not an avid reader of novels, I loved these books, and I am eager to share them with my boys.

Vastly entertaining historical tales
By Culper, Jr.
These two books--The White Company especially--were great favorites when I was a boy. My father read them aloud to us, which might be the best possible way to enjoy these works, at least for the young. They still hold up more than 40 years later. Doyle is not only a master storyteller, but works in fascinating details on everything from the art of making stained glass to "terms of venery", those odd collective terms for animals (like 'a cete of badgers'). A true immersion in a different place and time.

Superb
By Augusta
Who needs the special effects we're bombarded with in the name of entertainment these days? This author completely captivates you, in the most enjoyable way, with writing and storytelling skill. I had no idea Arthur Conan Doyle was such an excellent writer or that he could be so gently funny. I've loved being under the spell of this book. It made another place and time come alive again, and it was exciting to be there. Another reviewer wrote that he's hanging onto his battered copy, rather than handing it down, because he wants to read it again before he dies. I understand. It's that kind of book, for the ages, and it has taken its place among my very favorites.
