Concise and handy guide to Google Maps API

Why can't all tech books be written like this? It gets right to the point, and the reader starts scripting maps in the second paragraph of chapter 1. The style is, code first, code explained second, which is what I personally prefer. Examples are simple and clear, and progression is appropriate. Best for those who already know html, css and js/json. My recommendation is to type the code in by hand rather than use the downloads. The examples are mostly short and for me, this helps me retain the concepts. All code is useful, no fluff, especially the geocode script. Great as a series of tutorials, but also as a type of field manual. Well done.

This is the book I've been looking for...

The most comprehensible, in-depth book on the subject of pranayama that I've yet found. Even more informative and accessible than B. K. S. Iyengar's "Light on Pranayama." As it is a more advanced yogic practice, pranayama can be somewhat difficult to explain and even more complicated to perform. Lysebeth has spared no secret and presents the processes involved in a clear, straight-forward manner. No hocus-pocus. Just the facts. This is the book I was looking for on these more advanced yogic practices.

Never thought pranayama would have such an impact on my life

I am a freediver (i dive without bottle). That sport requires an extreme concentration and capacity to handle stress. Pranayama is a known technique to improve diving performances because if you don't panic you will stay longer under water. However when i started to read the book i discovered that pranayama was usefull far beyong the scope of this book. By better controlling my body I came to reduce stress, diminish any pain i could have, be better at presenting courses (I am an IT trainer) and to increase my concentration.
The introduction to the book attemps to link science to yogist technics, but it's badly done and frankly could have been spared.
Fortunately most of the book covers the pranayama technique. The postures, which are illustrated with pictures greatly help to succeed in the technique. Some exercises had powerful effects on me such as lowering my heartbeat, increasing at will of skin temperature, tickeling effects in differents parts of my body or simply helping to fall asleep.
The book has opened a new perspective in my life. It helps me to feel better in my body.
If you have some knowledge on yoga, you can safely buy the book. Else you need to learn some basic postures to effectively make the exercices. You can take some class or buy from the same author "Yoga self Taught".

About the Author
Alex Varughese is professor of biblical literature at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and has been a member of the Department of Religion at MVNU since 1982. Previous to his current position, he served as a professor in the religion department at Eastern Nazarene College. He is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Kerala, India. He received his M.A. in religion from Olivet Nazarene University and M.Div. from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He also holds M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in biblical studies from Drew University. He is currently serving as the Managing Editor for The Centennial Initiative Textbook project for the Church of the Nazarene. Roger Hahn, Ph.D, is Dean and Professor of New Testament at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri. David Neale is Vice-President and Academic Dean at Booth University College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Previously he served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Ambrose University College (formerly Canadian Nazarene University College) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He holds a BA in Sociology from Idaho State University, an MA in Biblical Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield, England. Dr. C. Jeanne Serrao is Professor of Biblical Literature and Dean of the School of Theology and Philosophy at Mount Vernon Nazarene University where she founded and is the coordinator for the Bi-Annual Women In Ministry Networking Day.Dr. Serrao has served as an Education Pastor and Christian School Administrator in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The Final Piece is Here!

Rebecca gets her chance to talk to Kade McMillian whom she has thought herself in love with since high school. She has not had a real relationship because of her hang ups over him.

Then she met Jason, who is also her employee. He has real feelings for her and asks that she give him a chance. She gives in and they go on a work trip together alone to see if this is what they want.

Jason is really all that she has ever wanted. If only he were closer in age to her and not her employee. She is being encouraged to date him by everyone around her, but is reluctant to cause the company to have a bad reputation.

When she finally gets her dinner with Kade, Jason happens to walk in and see them together. Since she never told him what was going on - he thinks the worst. Can true love conquer all? Can the honest feelings be love? I found it compelling and was hard to put down! Makes a great gift!

Amazing!

Love the ending. what a great short story series. I absolutely loved it.

Book 3 picks up with her being torn between two,Kade and Jason. She decides that she wants to explore if Jason and her could really have the relationship she craves. They are heading to another town for a business meeting and he is going with her and she plans to straighten things out with Kade when she returns.

On the business trip she decides that she wants to be with Jason. He is the love she has been wanting for 16 years. She meets with Kade but things threaten Her relationship. Jason didn't know she was having dinner with Kade. Will Jason forgive her or Will her heart be once again be Broken?

I Denfinitely recommend this Series to everyone. Its a short story that you must read!

LOVED THE ENDING

The conclusion to Rebecca story was amazing....she finally chooses one of the men who want her, I was really hoping it would be her business partner and best friend Parker, but no such luck. When Rebecca goes to tell the man she did not choose that there is no them, the one she did choose sees it and walks away.

Will the relationship be over as its starting???will Rebecca remain alone???

R is a rapidly evolving lingua franca of graphical display and statistical analysis of
experiments from the applied sciences. Currently, R offers a wide range of functionality for nonlinear regression analysis, but the relevant functions, packages and documentation are scattered across the R environment. This book provides a coherent and unified treatment of nonlinear regression with R by means of examples from a diversity of applied sciences such as biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine and toxicology.
The book begins with an introduction on how to fit nonlinear regression models in R. Subsequent chapters explain in more depth the salient features of the fitting function nls(), the use of model diagnostics, the remedies for various model departures, and how to do hypothesis testing. In the final chapter grouped-data structures, including an example of a nonlinear mixed-effects regression model, are considered.
Christian Ritz has a PhD in biostatistics from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University. For the last 5 years he has been working extensively with various applications of nonlinear regression in the life sciences and related disciplines, authoring several R packages and papers on this topic. He is currently doing postdoctoral research at the University of Copenhagen.
Jens C. Streibig is a professor in Weed Science at the University of Copenhagen. He has for more than 25 years worked on selectivity of herbicides and more recently on the ecotoxicology of pesticides and has extensive experience in applying nonlinear regression models. Together with the first author he has developed short courses on the subject of this book for students in the life sciences.

A Slim Volume, but Useful

Nonlinear Regression with R (NRwR) offers an example driven tour of R's base nonlinear regression tool, nls(). As you can glean from the table of contents, NRwR covers nonlinear models, generalized linear models, self-starting functions and model diagnostics (tools for inference as well). It does so in ~113 pages. BE WARNED. The book looks short because it is. Most of the material is helpful, but you are paying close to 50 bucks for a relatively short book.

High points:

-Model diagnostics are handled fairly well. The book walks you through checking for heteroskedacity, writing a function to test a hypothesis and dealing with mis-specified errors.

-Examples abound. If you read this book as it was intended, you will download the nlrwr package and follow along as the authors walk through datasets. Each page has sample code allowing you to reproduce the graphs and results in the book.

-Length can be an advantage. If you aren't particularly interested in the theory behind nonlinear regression, you wont be encumbered by it here.

-The bibliography is broken down by theme and is genuinely helpful.

Low Points:

-As reliant as the book is on nls(), I would love to have seen more digging into the peculiarities of this function. Chapter 4 is devoted to nls(), but it is a mere 16 pages, one of which is basically the gist of ?nls. I know it is beyond the scope, but I would have been excited to see more detail on nls so we can use the output from a nonlinear least squares problem as a building block to a larger function.

- organization for the book is a bit odd. The introduction is comprised of three examples of nonlinear regression in the field. It is about six pages and seems to have been cobbled together. The book would have been better served by a more thorough introduction.

-The topics covered are relatively narrow.

-Length is a serious factor.

All in all this is a good effort which would be easily 4 or 5 stars at a lower price point. I'm happy I bought it, but if your budget is constrained and you are forced to choose between this and another book on R's internals, think hard about the pros and cons.

Consise and to the point... but do not expect to learn R or the nuts and bolts of non-linear regression

This book is pretty concise and to the point: It will show you how to do non-linear regression with R but will teach you neither. If you are familiar with non-linear regression methodologies and have some familiarity with R, this book will have you using R for your non-linear regression needs in a snap. In this sense the short length and limited scope are an asset.

If you are not familiar with the theory behind non-linear regression I would certainly recommend complementing this book with a more in depth treatment of the subject. I found Bates and Watts to be very balanced in terms of presenting important information without being overwhelmingly mathematical. On the other hand, if you never used R, then you will need to learn it elsewhere as the book assumes certain level of familiarity with the environment.

In short, the book is a glorified tutorial on nls() and got me doing NLR in R pretty quickly. In this sense I recommend it and if price is not an issue I would think it is probably a good reference to have around. However, as other reviewers pointed out, the price seems disproportionate especially considering that there are other resources on-line that will do the trick. The price would be fairer if the book included tutorials in other related areas such as Bayesian inference with non linear models or an expanded treatment of non-linear mixed effects models, just to throw in some ideas.

Great Kickstart

This is a neat book. It's a great way to get an introduction to nonlinear regression via the use of R. It does not require any sort of heavy-hitting theoretical background; you can find other books (e.g., Seber and Wild) to fill in the details. By carefully studying the examples and the R code, one can definitely learn a few things that will serve as grist for future reading and applications. It's small size probably means you'll actually read it and suits its intended purpose!

About the Author
William E. Wagner, III, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Sociology at California State University, Channel Islands. Prior to coming to CSU, Channel Islands, he served as a member of the faculty and Director of the Institute for Social and Community Research at CSUB. He completed his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Wagner also holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics from St. Mary's College of Maryland. He has published in national and regional scholarly journals on topics such as urban sociology, sports, homophobia, and academic status. Dr. Wagner is co-author of Adventures in Social Research, 7th Edition (Babbie, Halley, Wagner, & Zaino, 2010)

Understanding Life thru a Warrior's Eyes

This short book is an intimate Spiritual portrait of one of America's great military leaders. In the simple text that makes up this story you will be allowed a window into a man's soul and have the privilege of making some decisions about your life and beliefs. This book is not a 'how to' or even a 'you should' but more a man's personal account of wrestling with the cruelties of life and finding that answer to that quesiton, "why"? It was uplifting and honest. No pretense and no pride. Good words to live by no matter your conclusions on the source.

A+ man, C+ book

Aug 2012 update - reread the booklet again. My previous review comments about booklet, man vs. journey, and authorship remain unchanged. I do believe the book has significance because the subject itself will make the reader think - if he/she has served in the military. Gen. Moore was my commanding general during the early part of my service, so that helped make the "read between the lines" a bit more clear to me. If you have not been in the military, or do not know Hal Moore, probably this book(let) won't do much for you. If you have not served, and want this book, I suggest "We Were Soldiers ..." as a prerequisite (at least watch the movie and recognize that it can not tell the whole story) to put the journey in perspective. If you have served and/or know Moore, this will be a good read if you are on the journey that follows military service.

Original review (c. 2008) follows: Gen. Moore is a true leader, and a genuinely spiritual man. The book's (it is actually quite short, almost a "booklet" rather than a book) description is clear - it was written about Gen. Moore, not by Gen. Moore. Even so, I would have liked more insight into the General's spiritual thoughts. At first reading the "hero worship" got a bit thick and heavy, in fact it got in the way of the true meaning and significance of Gen. Moore's spiritual journey as told by the narrator/observer. However, after finishing the "book" and letting the ideas sit and filter, the meaning and significance of his spiritual journey, and in the process my journey, did begin to become more clear. My experience was that the first reading was disappointing, the second reading was better, and the provoked thought process was rewarding. Do not expect deep insight and there are few if any revelations from the General. However, if you are willing to take a prompt and give thought on your own, this may be a good place to start.

A Journey Observed

Written by Toby Warren, General's Moore, friend, confidant and driver, the manuscript of this book was never intended for publication. It was originally written only for General Moore's adult children, to give them a view and perspective of their father's deep spiritualty as seen and experienced by one of his closest friends.

When they read it, and as others read it, it eventually found its way to a small publishing house and eventually to the domain where it has received tremendous acclaim and admiration, especially by the military and in particular by military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This book is not intended to be a biography or a history. It is what it was intended to be. A snapshot look at a great man's spirtual journey and its impact and influence on him at this point late in his life.

Is it a book written by a an adoring friend? Yes. But that doesn't change the truth one bit. Not about the man and not about the truths it contains.

Few of us will command men in combat, especially combat as deadly as that described in General Moore's book, "We Were Soldiers Once and Young," but we can learn from great men. We ought to learn and need to learn from great men.

This book might best be described as "the rest of the story" in terms of General Moore. And it whets the appetite for this forthcoming book, "We are Soliders Still," due out in August, 2008.

All three, taken together, give us an intimate portrait of an American military hero and his deep abiding faith.

A critic could rip this little book apart from a literary and critical standpoint, but to do so would be to miss the whole point for which it was written. And for which is has been published.

I learned of Amos Niven Wilder in a discussion of this book, first published by Harper and Row as "The Language of the Gospel: Early Christian Rhetoric" from Bob and Kelly Wilhelm who operate Storyfest. Harvard U. Press has reversed the original title and subtitle, but Wilder's message is unchanged: each person can "tell the story" of (Christian) experience without memorizing verses from scripture. Story and storytelling remain essential to humanity's collective spiritual progress. Go quickly and tell.

"The first axiom for camp is... do not make yourself uncomfortable for want of things to which you are accustomed," advised The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook in 1890 to high-born Brits living in India, most of which England had by that point colonized through a succession of wars, or military "campaigns," throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. This impeccably curated, insightfully narrated, and richly illustrated volume proves that the homesick subjects of the Raj took such advice deeply to heart. It showcases nearly 200 years of furniture designed expressly to approximate all the refinement of a proper British household inside the canvas tents of ranking officers afar, but also to break down and fold up fast for easy, compact transport (hence campaign furniture's other appellation, "knock-down" furniture). Masterfully put together by independent curator Brawer, previously a researcher in the Indian and Southeast Asian departments of London's venerable Victoria and Albert Museum, this handsome volume succeeds on two levels: it amply highlights the stylistic elegance and technical ingenuity of this kind of furniture--a bureau that becomes a bed when its drawers are removed; a lady's bidet that folds into a leather case; or a dining table seating 20 that fits inside a 10-inch-deep box--while putting it (often quite wryly) in the historical context of an expatriate society that sought to re-create Britain wherever it went and had little or no interest in adapting to or learning about the customs or designs of the people it conquered (and essentially enslaved). About the Author
Nicholas A. Brawer earned his Master's degree in art history from the Courtauld Institute in London. Currently an independent curator, he has held research positions at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the British and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol. He has written on decorative arts and architecture for Antiques magazine. This is his first book. Jerome Phillips is an antique dealer, and an authority on British military furniture. He lives in Oxfordshire.

I just had to have this book. The subject matter was unusual and touched on the social aspects of camp life in the British Army.

Collapsible or 'campaign' furniture has been standard issue for people on the move for centuries. Armies in ancient Greece and Rome relied on folding chairs, cots and the like as they advanced from battlefield to battlefield. In the Middle Ages, furniture that handily collapsed was among the important domestic possessions of peripatetic aristocrats, who carted their chairs, tables and beds from castle to castle and disguised crude carpentry with costly silk hanings and tapestries. But according to British Campaign Furniture, Elegance Under Canvas, 1740-1914, it wasn't until the late 18th century that campaign furniture became a sophisticated accoutrement almost entirely of the British empire, outfitting the homes of Anglos abroad. A cultural constant, often found in paintings of conquering heroes, campaign furniture was hip, too. As elegantly explained by author Nicholas A. Brawer--an independent curator formerly with Sotheby's New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London--the craze for campaign furniture was fueled as much by its practicality as by its owners' desire to preserve their national image. Challenged to set up thoroughly British encampments in distant colonial outposts, soldiers and memsahibs set fail for India and points beyond with entire housefuls of furniture--most of it cunningly designed to be disassembled and packed tightly into trunks and boxes. When Mary Bolton and Captain Benjamin Simner, an officer in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, arrived in Madras in 1865, the first thing the newlyweds did was to upack two crates, each measuring about three feet square, and out tumbled an entire living and dining room: a dining table, four dining chairs, a settee, a sideboard and an easy chair. Ingenious but also luxurious. The suite, a wedding gift, was made of hand-carved walnut upholstered in button-tufted brocade. Dozens of now-obscure firms like John Jacques, Morgan & Sanders and John Ward dominated the campaign furniture industry; the Simners' suite was made by Ross & Co., a Dublin concern. Such was the demand by aristocratic soldiers, travelers and diplomates that high-profile cabinetmakers produced their share of campaign furniture as well. Thomas Sheraton designed camp beds for cavalry officers and other collapsible furniture, as did Thomas Chippendale, A. Hepplewhite & Co. and Ince & Mayhew--all of whom, Brawer notes, 'furiously competed for commissions' from outward-bound Britons.
Practical and stylish, campaign furniture allowed designers and inventors to pack as much furniture into as small a space as possible. Chairs, tables and a sofa could be packed into the lower half of a chiffonier. Canopy beds were conjured out of nothing more than a few metal rods and tightly rolled curtains dripping with fringe. Once its deftly turned legs and leaves were stored away in a secret compartment, a 10-foot mahogany dinign table could be reduced to the size of a small area rug. And at the Crystal Palace exhibition in 1851, Benjamin Taylor offered a line of campaign furniture with cork-fiber cushions that doubled as life preserves. Several items depicted in Brawer's book will be seen in 'Britain's Portable Empire: Campaign Furniture from the 18th and 19th Centuries,' an exhibition curated by Brawer opening in July at the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, New York. Fascinating, erudite--and spiced with often comical excerpts from expatriates' letters home--British Campaign Furniture is a delightul glimpse into one of design history's oddest yet most compelling detours.

When Georgian and Victorian top-brass set off on military campaigns during the 19th century they took the furniture with them. It was simply taken for granted that when a military officer set off for Africa or India he expected the same standard of living he obviously enjoyed at home. While he was 'under canvas' as life in camp was called, an officer assured himself of a high degree of comfort by taking along carefully chosn and sometimes privately made campaign or 'knock-down' furniture.
There was really very little difference between normal household furniture and the knock down variety. It was simply that the latter could be taken apart at a moment's notice, folded up, packed into boxes, transpoted to wherever and then re-assembled, without the use of nails, screws, tacks or tools, in some corner of a foreign field 'that was forever elegantly furnished England.' When these things turn up on the furniture stands at the NEC fairs or in the sale catalogues, the first thing that strikes you is their absolute elegance. The superb designs of these canvas and wood lunging chairs, bureaux, beds or whatever, reflects the sense of calm superiority which belonged to the officer class, its social and military rank and its unflurried attitude to travel, camp, battle and other people--particularly inferiors. Campaign furniture included chests, writing boxes, silver cutlery sets, much favoured by people like the Duke of Wellington, brass candlesticks which folded down into two tiny little doughnut shapes which could be slipped into the pocket, bookcases, inlaid games tables, sofa-beds, washstands and even collapsible bidets for officers' wives who were also equipped with rubber knickers to combat the unhealthy climate of India during the monsoon. The illustrations of these things (not the knickers of course which have long since perished) shown in the recently published British Campaign Furniture--Elegance Under Canvas, 1740-1914 by Nicholas A. Brawer (Abrams) show the sheer beauty of the bookcases, sets of chairs, dining tables, side tables...The folding bookcase shown, for example, on page 21, has the metal grilles of its more superior brethren but is a finished piece of cabinet work in its own right. And the pictures tell an extraordinary story, since it was not only the purely utilitarian pieces which were taken halfway across the world, we can also read that the Memsahibs looked for, expected and received, complete dining suites, tables to seat a dozen people with beautifully upholstered chairs to match and found it unloaded at the docks in a DIY box set. The sofa-beds which we use today to put up guests are obviously nothing new. One is shown here opening out from an elegant bergere sofa, into a king-size double bed. And astonishing dining tables could form an elegant piece of furniture or be made so portable as to go with the regiment. But then, officers in the Georgian period would require a large dining table in their tents. It meant that they could maintain their prestige and rank during the battle. And it was needed when the port went round. These things were taken seriously enough by Sheraton, Chippendale and Hepplewhite, wonderful furniture makers and designers, all of whom concentrated their minds on problems of portability. Interestingly enough, in this excellent book, which examines a fascinating and little known area of furntiure collecting in a scholarly way, Nicholas Brawer makes the point that although we tend to associate Chippendale and company with up-market wildly expensive drawing room masterpieces, these men were quite happy to place campaign furntiure in the main steam of early 19th century furniture making. But how you got all this gear from place to place was amazing and it is shown in this book in some extremely funny Indian watercolours, themselves obviously highly collectable. As late as 1910 Harrods were advertings equipment for exploreres, miners and sportsmen who might wish to make homes in Lucknow, Suez or the Australian outback. Harrods claimed their furniture could be packed in cases suitable for 'Camel Loads, Mule Loads, Pony Loads and Native Head Loads.' Presumably, little tins containing anti-insect oil also went with the furniture to combat termites in unfriendly climates. And the amount of local camp followers anxious to earn a few pence a day carrying the Sahibs and their endless baggage was inexhaustible. A delightfully silly photograph shows Mary Curzon, the Indian Viceroy's missus crossing a stream in India in 1904 with enough elephants, horses and locals to fill up the Indian army. When Captain Hope Grant of the 9th Lancers (an avid violinist and composer) was posted to Simla, it took 93 men to carry his bits and pieces. Flora Annie Steel in 1890 advised military wives sailing for India, that 'a piano must be carried by coolies of whom 14 or 16 will be needed.'
