Great but slightly biased

I had to buy this book for a class I was taking. I really thought the book was a great resource. It did a great job of arranging the various classroom discipline and management approaches into an easy to read format. It was very obvious, though, which technique the author had a hand in contributing to. When I got to that chapter, I kept thinking, "wow-this author is convinced this is the best technique." Then, I noticed he talked about himself as one of the leading creators of that method. Overall, though, it's a great book.

Hilarious

This book is based (and biased upon) a number of different theories. In this context, it is a decent review of the major behavioral theories, and isn't a bad way for educators who are new to the subject to compare the works of the major theorist. The meat of the book, which is the author's own work, is completely out to lunch. A quote from the book that illustrates this perfectly: "Teachers may on occasion need to confront a gun-wielding student who offers a modest threat for violence" (p. 329). This statement raises many questions, such as what would a severe threat for violence look like, if teachers are expected to occasionally confront gun-wielding students? However, this statement is so out of context with the types of behaviors, and their remedies, that are presented in the book.
Do not spend $70+ on this book, you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for a good laugh from Edwards, I would recommend borrowing this book from your local library, as nobody needs to privately own it.
