Well worth the price of admission

Wow. Okay this was good. Sometimes great. Unexpected even.

When I read the synopsis about this one I had some doubts. It contains a few elements that I personally am not a big fan of reading about. Adultery being the greatest. Of course who is a fan of that one? I also wasn't sure from the wording of the description that the "husband" wouldn't be involved in the sexual relationship between the two women. Rest assured he is not. The husband is a butt head and there is never any doubt that he is anything other than an butt head.

I was able to move past the adultery though because the angsty and compelling relationship between Caton and Amelia drew me in and simply wouldn't let go. The character's in this novel are incredibly flawed and that also assists in making them incredibly real. We've all heard the phrase "a moth to the flame" and nothing could describe Caton's draw towards Amelia better. Its like she simply couldn't help herself. There wasn't a single moment where she was capable of offering even token resistance. She never stood a chance despite the fact that she always knew what the consequences of this relationship would have on her life. I felt like I was holding my breath during this journey with Caton as she fell deeper and deeper into Amelia's spell.

There was also never any doubt in my mind about the seductiveness of the beautiful and exotic Amelia. I think it is imperative that when an author creates a character such as this that the reader must also fall for her charms. And fall I did. I felt and understood Caton's desire and anguish and surrender.

Initially we mostly see the world from Caton's eyes as her life begins to intertwine with that of Amelia's. I loved how this was done because we as readers feel as if we are standing on uneven footing in how to regard Amelia. She is cruel and exquisite. Eventually the world begins to shift and we see other points of view which brings about much needed clarity.

I knew I was in for the long haul at the first 1/3 of this book. By the end though I loved it. The ending was great imho. I can't say more without saying too much.

If I were to have a complaint its that I wish there were more dialogue in the novel. Sometimes I felt like the point the author was making that the characters communicated in anything but words. I understood that and it was well done, but I do wish they had talked more. When Caton and Amelia did speak I relished those words that passed between them. Maybe that is the point?

Finally...this novel describes itself as an erotic romance. It is definitely that. The physical scenes between our leads were plentiful, well done and varied. I never grew tired of this aspect of their relationship. The story though is really what makes this erotic novel special and more than just a flash in the pan. This one is memorable.

Fantastic Story

This was a really good story. The magnetism between the two main characters was wonderfully addictive. Every page I read made me crave more. I found the story not only well written but some what poetic as well. It was a blissful mixture of sexual tension, romance and eroticism. It's rare that I find a book that makes me wish it never had an ending because I could go on reading it forever. This was that type of book for me. Thumbs up to Riley LaShea. This is the first book I've read of hers. I look forward to reading more of her work.

Wow.... this book is one the best lesbian fics I had the pleasure to read. It is well worth the price, sex is HOT, not distasteful. The plot and characters are well developed. This is a page turner, I'm not going to give any of the story away but both main characters are flawed. Read this book you won't be disappointed, I promise.

Ashe Bedevere, rake extraordinaire, has spent ten years traveling, gambling, drinking, seducing women, and avoiding his home and family. Those ten years have seen terrible things happen to the Bedevere estate in his absence. When his father's death demands he return home, he is shocked by what receives him. No longer does his home sing with beauty, but the servants are sparse, and the estate is in debt. The dead Earl was clever though; he knew what his son and home would need and he's decreed his wishes in his will. Genevra (Neva) Ralston is a young and beautiful American widow. She's as shocked as Ashe by the Earl's will, but she is uninterested in being Ashe's newest mistress and has no plans to remarry. Has the rake, capable of seducing any woman, finally met his match?

This was a great read, well written, and well paced. There are a few editing issues, but nothing major enough to disrupt my enjoyment of the book. I liked Neva, I thought she was a perfect foil for Ashe. She has a very modern thinking process though, which at times caused me to pause, I don't know if historical romance readers will be bothered by it or not. I found her a spirited and interesting heroine.

I feel like the book really belongs to Ashe, the hero, rather than Neva. I felt his POV deeper, I think he exhibited more emotional depth than Neva's POV did. I also felt that Ashe was the only character that grew as the story progressed. The antagonists in this were creepy, and well done. I felt having them on the back burner simmering was a good tactic, they were never far from my mind and had settled in ominously.

The romance was great, I really enjoyed Ashe and Neva and was actually sad when this ended, which is always a sign of a good book, I would happily recommend this.

Casanova, English style???

I must admit that I liked Ashe, the rakish hero that makes sex an art form, from the beginning. He's another in a long line of sexy lovers conjured by the talented imagination of Bronwyn Scot. This, the third installment in the Rakes Beyond Redemption, is a well-written story that manages to touch one on all levels, almost as much as he does!

That said, the story captures one's attention in the beginning, when Ashe receives a note of the news of his father's death, while he's in bed with Lady Hargrove-somebody else's wife. He returns to Bedvedere, his childhood home, and finds it in major disrepair. His brother, Alex, is now the earl, but is not in residence and purportedly mentally unstable, and unable to assume the duties of running the estate. Ashe believes he's to take up the reins for his brother, but instead of being the man-in-charge, he finds himself part of a regency. His father having petitioned the Crown for this trusteeship, made up of himself, an American heiress he's never met before, Genevra, and Henry, his hated cousin, has set in motion events that will define Ashe and Genevra's future. The regency's divided into shares and the heiress has the major shares. Who is she and why is she in charge? These are Ashe's first questions, but not his last, as he makes a journey home, and to the man he can be. On the way to that man, he seduces a wife, breaks his brother out of the private hospital, and kicks his cousin to the curb.

I really liked this story, and I felt that it was more or less, Ashe's tale, with Genevra thrown in for spice. The attraction between Ashe and Genevra, at times was hot, and sensuous, but always honest; no subterfuge, or pretense was involved in the fact that they wanted each other, which was refreshing. You'll run the gamut of emotions in this, and I recommend it for a winter's read!

Putting Others Ahead of Self

I loved this story! I had read the first in the series which was a dellightful battle of the sexes. I was concerned at the start of this one that it would not be as enjoyable. It started out slow and sad. However, I liked this one better than the first.
What I love best is the heroine Genevra. She had had a bad marriage that ended with disaster. Instead of feeling sorry for herself or hiding, she moved forward with her life. She even worked toward helping other women to have a sense of purpose and independence.
I also enjoyed the hero Ashe. He was a typical rogue who only worried about himself, his needs, and his pleasures. He is put into a position where he must take care of and think about others. He is put in a forced relationship with Genevra who challenges his preconceived notions of the fairer sex. Watching the pair fall in love was a joy!

Staying Power

Colored Girl Confidential is a breath of fresh air. With each page I feel that I share the laughter, the tears, and the highs and lows of life with a friend who has known me for years. I really appreciate the format of the book and how it is amenable to jumping around (like LC's blog), but yet it weaves together beautiful stories about life with exquisite ease. I found myself in tears after reading Chapter 17 because it affirmed me in a moment when I needed it most...and laughed with Chapter 18 as I felt LC's story about letting go of the friends you needed most...but from whom you grew apart.

Books that bring me through all emotions: loud laughter, REAL tears, constructive criticism and self-reflection...these are the ones that stay with me. I know for sure that LC's work will be with me for years to come.

And man did you read that forward from her Momma?!?!? Talk about a kick ass colored girl...but it is as we always say: the apple never falls too far from the tree.

Dorothy Crawford is Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Edinburgh, where she is also Assistant Principal for the Public Understanding of Medicine. She was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to medicine and higher education.

Our Unwinnable War

Bacteria have a bad reputation. We think of them as causing illness, and that's correct, of course, but overwhelmingly they do not cause us harm. Without them, indeed, we could not digest our food, and elements could not be recycled into the environment. They have been performing this sort of vital service for around 600 million years. There are a million or so microbes we know about, and of them, only 1,415 are known to cause disease in humans, with the rest steadily chugging away to keep the world in balance. Those pathogenic ones are the main subject in _Deadly Companions: How Microbes Shaped Our History_ (Oxford University Press) by Dorothy H. Crawford. A microbiologist, Crawford has written plenty of scientific papers, but here (as in a previous book about viruses) she writes for a popular audience to show how microbes, especially the ones that bother and kill us, have affected the humans that are interlopers in their world. We must never forget that most microbes are our companions and are not deadly, and that we live in a mutually beneficial partnership with millions of them. But it is their world: "We relative newcomers to the planet," ominously writes Crawford, "emerge from the safe environment of our mother's womb pristine, untouched by the infectious microbes, but within hours our bodies are colonised by swarms of them, all intent on living off this new food source."

Microbes don't mean to hurt us, of course, and despite the upsurge of religious feeling that accompanies any plague, there is no reason to think that they are doing anything but their natural cycles without any supernatural tinkering to deliver lessons to afflicted humans. The great problem with infective microbes is that they can change faster than we can. Resistance to the antibiotics we have had for only a few decades is merely the most recent manifestation of their evolutionary adaptability, and there is no reason to think that any new generation of antibiotics is going to change this pattern. Crawford shows how different microbes afflicted us when we were hunter gatherers than did so when we changed to living in farming communities. Diseases have changed history. The ruler Crawford mentions that seems to have been most affected by them was Napoleon. He wanted to extend his empire into the New World, but mosquito-borne yellow fever decimated the troops within the Caribbean, and prevented his plan to move on to New Orleans and points north. It was not just the cold and starvation that kept Napoleon's troops from taking Russia. Louse-borne typhus took its toll, and without it, many historians think Napoleon could have gone on to conquer Europe.

Crawford takes up bubonic plague, the potato blight fungus, cholera, smallpox and many more, explaining the natural cycle of each microbe, its vectors (mosquitoes, fleas, lice) and its reservoirs in the wild (snails, birds, cattle). It isn't all biology; Crawford points out that _the_ major cause of microbe-related deaths is poverty, with a hugely disproportionate toll on poorer nations. The science she writes about, all with clarity and enthusiasm, is something new, especially compared to how long we have been going about with these microbial companions. Dealing with diseases scientifically has been regarded as impious; she quotes a 1722 sermon railing against smallpox vaccination "... because inoculation opposes the will of God, who sends disease (including smallpox) either to try our faith or to punish us for our sins." Science, however, is not going to keep us out of trouble; we have headlines these days about microbes that are resistant to our miracle drugs, and our own misuse of drugs against tuberculosis has resulted not in "multiply drug resistant" TB, but in "extensively drug resistant" TB, with "completely drug resistant" TB looming in the future. Even if we were to invent the superdrug researchers jokingly call "gorillacillin", it would kill off our helper microbes as well as the villains, and history shows that even such a drug would be overcome by resistance eventually. It isn't hopeless, and Crawford has written a sobering but not a pessimistic book. We have won battles, and that's something to be proud of. But we will have to content ourselves with winning battles, for we will never win the war.

A formidable case for evolution and natural selection

Quite a bit over my head. One needs to have some background in microbiology and bacteriology to understand the consequences of those damned microbes. It is definite "proof" of Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection. I felt that the narrative made a strong case for evolution and totally demolished the case for "creation science." I wish the book was less technical, although I have no idea on how to accomplish that goal. I commend the author for making to attempt to enlighten the unenlightened.

About the Author
Kerry W. Buckley , recieved his Ph.D. in American Social and Intellectual History from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he now heads the office of Humanities Programs in the Division of Continuing Education . He has taught the history of psychology at Wellsey College and has published articles on Watson and behaviorism in the Journal of History of the Behavioral Sciences and The Social Science Encylopedia { London }.

Great book!

Mr. Buckley definetely nailed it with this book. It is fun to read, complete and rich with details. The meticulous way Kerry Buckley has to cross Watson's history of life with that of psychology gives the book a rich context, approaching what was happening at the time from various points of view. I strongly recomend it to anyone interested in learning about the biography of John Broadus Watson, the beginnings of behaviorism or general history of american psychology.

I saw a play called, "the brain of broadus" which relied on this book for an overview of his life. It's a fascinating read. Not a page turner, but extremely well researched and worth the read!!

John Watson, a reappraisal

After rereading this book I realize this man predicted the blossoming of behaviorism as best way to apply psychology in education, raising children and business. Although he missed the mark with regard to raising children, he proved his right in applying classical conditioning to advertising and behavior therapy. Operant conditioning was not yet discovered (by B.F. Skinner) so we are even be more optimistic about the foreland of applied behavior analysis than Watson was. We need applied behavior analysis more than ever after the disappointing results of cognitive psychology, a relapse to introspection.

About the Author

Patrick Graupp began his training career at the Sanyo Electric Corporate Training Center in Japan after graduating with highest honors from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1980. There he learned to deliver Training Within Industry (TWI) from his mentor Kazuhiko Shibuya. Mr. Shibuya was trained by Kenji Ogawa, who was trained by the four TWI, Inc. trainers sent from the United States to help Japan rebuild industry in 1951. Patrick earned an MBA from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, while leading Sanyo’s global training effort. He was later promoted to the head of human resources for Sanyo North America Corp. in San Diego, California, where he settled.

Patrick partnered with Bob Wrona in 2001 to conduct TWI pilot projects in Syracuse, New York, that became the foundation for the TWI Institute, which has since trained a rapidly expanding global network of more than 1000 certified trainers who are now delivering TWI training in the manufacturing, health care, construction, energy, and service industries in the United States and around the globe. The first edition of their book The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors was a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize Recipient for 2007.

Robert J. Wrona began his manufacturing career at Chevrolet in Buffalo, New York, where he was promoted to shop floor supervisor after earning a BS from Canisius College, Buffalo, New York. He moved on to Kodak in Rochester, New York, where he became interested in organizational development while earning his MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. Bob joined a high-volume retail drugstore chain in Syracuse, New York, when it was a 12-store operation. He standardized store operating procedures, developed internal training, and reorganized central distribution as the company profitably grew into a regional chain of 140 in 11 years.
