1000+ pages in the palm of your hand, I mean Kindle!

I'm currently studying for the CPA and I'm using this ebook as a reference guide when I need clarification on a certain topic. I love to have hard copy editions of all my textbooks/learning materials so I was hesitant to purchase this in the Kindle version. However, after seeing the hard copy edition in person, I realized I didn't want to lug a 1000+ page book around that is also a paperback (durability issues). So I purchased the Kindle version and I have to say I'm very satisfied.

It took a bit of getting used to but now I think I'm getting much more out of this book from the Kindle version than I would have with the paperback edition. If I need to find a sub-sub-topic, I just need to do a search, rather than poring over an index. Also, as in all Kindle books, I can find definitions as needed with a push of a button. Oh, I'm sorry, I mean tap, and hold ;) When I go to an appointment or some place that will require some waiting time, I have the entire GAAP book in my little Kindle Paperwhite. Maximizing my study time.

The only downside to the e-book version (assuming you are using a Kindle), is that large data tables are too big for the Kindle screen. Even if you bring the font size down to the size for ants to read, most tables would not fit. This results in cut off tables that could span multiple pages and pretty much have no utility. However, this problem is not a real issue because when I'm full on studying, I have my laptop out and i just use Kindle for PC software to read the book. There, the tables are shown in full and are completely readable and understandable.

As for the content itself, it's very clear and well-written with many examples. I love the book because it gives you the authoritative GAAP rules but also the reasoning behind those rules which really helps me understand why some rules are the way they are.

Great Accounting Guide

Wiley provides so many great accounting resources and this is one of them. I passed the CPA exam on my own thanks to Wiley products. This guide provides pretty good explanations on the ASC from FASB and includes some good examples.

The one downside is that the guide is a little dry, but that is to be expected.

Aull edited Prentice Hall’s first social media marketing textbook, and wrote its accompanying instructor’s manual. About the Author

Jacob Aull has been in the Internet marketing business since such a label existed. Drawing from his BFA in graphic design from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1994, Jake began doing web design and branding in the late 1990s as a partner in his own creative agency. While transitioning deeper into online marketing strategies, research, and search engine optimization, Jake achieved an M.S. in Marketing from Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business in 2009. There he customized his degree program and executed an independent capstone thesis project on social media marketing. In late 2010, GSU RCB asked him to write and teach its first course on Social Media Marketing, which he continues today, bringing in real-world companies and projects for students. He was an editor for Pearson-Prentice Hall’s first Social Media Marketing textbook, and was the author for its accompanying instructor’s manual. He has been published with articles and interviews in sources such as the Atlanta Business Chronicle, OZ Magazine, renown bloggers, GSU’s The Biz Magazine, and Atlanta Business Radio X. He was a cofounder and chair for the Atlanta Interactive Marketing Association Social Media SIG, speaking and bringing in prominent experts for Atlanta business community seminars. He has spoken in many associations and venues on social media marketing and search engine optimization. He is president of SCAD Alumni in Atlanta and is principal of Zen Fires Digital Marketing, providing SEO and digital marketing services to a variety of eCommerce and other clients.

This book is loaded with great easy to use ideas for SEO (and more)

I have read several other books on SEO that were good. This book is great. It presents an up to date easy to use strategy that effectively weaves together SEO, both organic (free SEO) and paid ads (Adwords) along with social media, and more. When I fist looked at this book, I randomly opened to a few different pages and each page has nuggets of information that will immediately help improve my website traffic and get people motivated to do business with me. Thank you Mr. Aull for this great immediately useful information.

I love this book! It has helped my company formulate and execute a search engine strategy that works. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a WordPress site. SEO is such a critical component to online success and Jake almost walks you through the entire process with this book. Great read.

Make sure you know what you want it for.

I purchased this item from BN, no reason really, was just in the store. Anyway, this is a pretty good book. I am someone who had NO familiarity with Wordpress and SEO rankings and this book does a good job of explaining the importance of this aspect. I would describe myself as an intermediate novice; I was able to set-up the site, install a theme, etc., but that was not learned from this book. This helped me understand what I needed to do improve rankings and used language that made sense to me. Also, since I had a theme installed on my Wordpress; there were a lot of things that I had to learn how to incorporate on my own. BUT...the books is helpful because it at least gave me the vocabulary and the areas that I was looking for and how to organize them in such a way that it was useful.

About the Author

Described as one of the most influential figures in human history, Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist who wrote extensively on the benefits of socialism and the flaws of free-market capitalism. His most notable works, Das Kapital and The Communist Manifesto (the latter of which was co-authored by his collaborator Friedrich Engels), have since become two of history s most important political and economic works. Marxism the term that has come to define the philosophical school of thought encompassing Marx s ideas about society, politics and economics was the foundation for the socialist movements of the twentieth century, including Leninism, Stalinism, Trotskyism, and Maoism. Despite the negative reputation associated with some of these movements and with Communism in general, Marx s view of a classless socialist society was a utopian one which did not include the possibility of dictatorship. Greatly influenced by the philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, Marx wrote in radical newspapers from his young adulthood, and can also be credited with founding the philosophy of dialectical materialism. Marx died in London in 1883 at the age of 64.

An excellent edition of a political classic

My five star rating is based on the quality of this handsome edition of one of the classics of political philosophy. Classics of this magnitude, whether Adam Smith's THE WEALTH OF NATIONS, Tocqueville's DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, or THE FEDERALIST PAPERS have achieved a status that makes the assigning of a rating rather silly. Regardless of one's feelings about Marxism or Communism, a work of such gigantic influence is of such a status that rating it is almost silly. It is one of the constitutive artifacts of our culture.

The particular edition I am reviewing is the recent reissue on Verso with an introduction by Eric Hobsbawm. There are a host of editions of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO, and virtually any of them will do the trick, but I very much enjoyed this edition, partly for the handsome jacket and binding, and partly for the superb intro by Hobsbawm. It is not a new translation, and indeed it isn't clear that there will ever be much of a demand for a new translation. The MANIFESTO was first published in 1848 and this translation in 1888. Moore's translation is the standard one for a simple reason: Engels examined it closely and helped Moore in editing the final draft of the translation.

Although I had read a fair amount in the writings of Marx over the years, this was my first time to read the work from cover to cover. I found it surprising on several levels. First, it was a much easier to read work than I had anticipated. This is upon reflection hardly surprising. The work was intended as a pamphlet for the masses, and it was essential that it be as understandable as possible. Also, the concepts and ideas articulated in these pages have become a part of the intellectual landscape of Western civilization. A host of ideas are commonplace, even among those who do not consider themselves sympathetic towards Marxism. It has become a commonplace of the past decade that Communism and Democracy clashed, and Communism lost. But the fact is that Marxist thought has exerted a massive influence on the way we view the world, and many things introduced by Marx are now central constituents of our world. Just look at the way we write history now. Before Marx a detailed consideration of the economic factors in an era was unheard of; now it is considered essential.

As a credo, I find myself conflicted over its contents, just as I always find myself conflicted in reading Marx. Marx's analyses of the dynamics governing capitalist society have always struck me as dead on. No one writes more presciently or timelessly about the structures of exploitation that are inherent in capitalism. Nonetheless, I find his positive proposals as to how to transcend capitalism to be untenable, and the post-capitalist world he describes to be undesirable. The best way to express this is that I find Marx the critic to be convincing and impressive, but Marx the visionary to be irrelevant. I want us to pay attention to Marx's critiques, but not to his proposals for change.

I was delighted in reading the book to find the word "highfalutin" in the text. The world seems somehow to be a more charming place for the unexpected presence of such a light-hearted word in the midst of a serious text.

Though listed as the work of Marx and Engels, Marx was the primary creator of the work. He also did the bulk of the writing. It isn't sufficiently commented on what a beautiful writer Marx could be when he tried. Too often he adopts the try academic style begun with Christian Wolff and continued by Kant, Fichte, and Hegel. But a host of exquisite phrases such as "All that is solid melts into air" shows that Marx could turn a phrase when conviction didn't prevent him.

Everyone interested in political thought or modern history needs to read this book. Its influence--its ongoing influence--is incalculable. Its critique of the exploitative nature of capitalism remains astonishingly relevant. And its predictions about the future course of history, even if no longer inspiring or convincing, are crucial to grasp if one is to understand many of the political impulses of the past one hundred and fifty years.

A work of historic significance

I remember reading the Communist Manifesto thirty years ago when I was at University. At the time it seemed tedious and impenetrable. Recently I re-read it and was amazed at how clear it seemed and what an effective piece of propaganda it was and how clear was the writing.
Reading through the program one realises the distance that has been travelled since it was written. Some of the major planks are the Abolition of Child Labour, the creation of a progressive income tax and Free Education.
Perhaps one of its major weaknesses is that Marx was a person who tended to carry a grudge. Thus a third of it is devoted to attacks on some of his contemporary enemies and rivals. These disputes have so long passed into history they are incomprehensible.
The modern notion of Communism of course stems not from Marx but from Stalin and Lenin. Marx wrote at a time when the only democratic country in Europe was France. England, Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire all had limited franchises and Russia was of course an autocracy. One of the major reforms he battled for was the introduction of democracy. It was his belief that the implementation of his program would flow from that.
Following Marx's death his movement evolved into a parliamentary movement the Social Democratic Party. Communism as a modern political phenomena dates from 1917 when splinter Social Democrats followed Russia's lead and developed small conspiratorial parties who were committed to the seizure of power by force. Stalinism is an offshoot of this system and is a form of state terror aimed at ensuring the survival of unpopular anti democratic regimes.
Reading through the Manifesto one can see the basis of a system which was not only an effective for mobilising political movements, but came to influence intellectual debate for the next century. There is also perhaps a sense of a naive optimism which could not contemplate the sorts of disasters which were to occur over the next hundred years.

Good writing, BAD edition!

Calling this edition the "Collectors Edition" is an egregious misnomer. While the binding is good, that's the only thing positive that can be said about this edition. This "publisher" apparently has no editor and no one who understands a thing about professional typesetting. It looks as if it was typed out in MS Word. Paragraphs are indented a full half inch, AND the paragraphs have entire blank lines between them. The first half of the book uses straight quotes and two hyphens for dashes. The second half of the book switches to curly quotes, but puts spaces around full em dashes. Over and over again the apostrophe of possessives have spaces before the 's' (as in "Marx' s").

I was so disgusted with the poor quality typesetting that I returned it. If you're looking for a nice, high quality hardcover of the Manifesto, go for the Barnes & Noble edition. They at least have professional typesetters.

To the "publishers": I highly recommend you get yourselves a copy of Jan Tschichold's _The Form of the Book_ (you can get it here on Amazon). Please learn how to typeset a book properly before printing any more books.

In his spiritual autobiography, Foreman writes, "I have God in my corner." He hopes the readers who take to heart his "tips from George's corner," found at the end of each chapter, will, too. In this book—part autobiography and largely a testimonial and spiritual inspiration—Foreman, well-known heavyweight boxing champion, businessman and preacher, leads readers through steps for living a godly Christian life. His book gives some autobiographical details, including his younger years, a few stories of his fights and most powerfully his experience of being born again after a boxing match he lost to Jimmy Young. Those stories serve to illustrate his theology, covered in short chapters that read like sermons. He exhorts readers to inspire others to excellence, answer the door when opportunity knocks, close it when temptation knocks, advance through adversity and so on. Foreman credits God with his remarkable successes throughout the book and ends it with an altar call, inviting readers to meet him in heaven someday. George Foreman begins his story when his favorite nephew had a seizure and was in a coma the doctors told his sister their was nothing they could do other then pray.George Foreman told his mother to tell the doctors he was George Foreman World Heavyweight Champion and he would pay to send in the best doctors.His mother gave him the same response that all he could do was pray so he got out of bed three different times and prayed three different prayers his last one being"If you are God take my life".His Nephew ended up surviving walking and talking.Later after a boxing match George Foreman's life was nearly taken when he met God.He began preaching and started a Youth Center for troubled kids and that is when he won the Workd Heavy Weight Championship title a second time raising money for the youth center.I would also reccomend By George his autobiography there is no profanity in his books.Thank you for taking the time to read this review!

A Touching Spiritual Memoir

Despite being a Christian myself, I am often a bit skeptical when athletes claim they have found the good Lord (as that claim is easy to say, not so easy to live). However, after reading this spiritual memoir by George Foreman, I am convinced that he truly has turned his life over to God, and that transformation is as fascinating as it gets.

Fans of classic boxing will remember Big George as one of the meanest, most ferocious heavyweight champions of all time. Yet, at nearly the height of his boxing fame, George (in the book) recounts a near-death experience sent to him by God that changed his life forever. Instead of letting his anger control him, George learned (though not without many trials) to trust in the Lord and serve the higher power. As a result, he believes, the Lord led him to make a comeback to boxing in his 40s and become the oldest heavyweight champion in the sport's long history.

Not only is Foreman's story interesting, but its principles can also be applied to the lives of every living human being. At the end of each chapter, George recaps the key points in easily-understood language, enough so that it can reach born-again Christians or those skeptical of religion altogether.

Overall, this book is very useful in serving two purposes: First, for more "advanced" Christians, it shows that, despite being difficult, the Christian battle can be won. Perhaps most importantly, though, it shows non-Christians how completely a life can be turned around for the better, as Foreman went from essentially a street thug to a servant of the Lord.

So, if you are waning in your faith and need a pick-me-up, or want to see the results of living a Godly life, George's cheerful attitude is just what you have been looking for!

Harper's stab at chick lit (after her Nice Girls series of supernatural romance) starts strong before falling into a rut of predictability. After Lacey Terwilliger receives a bouquet of flowers meant for her husband's mistress, she sends a scathing e-mail about his affair to everyone they know. Mercifully, Harper focuses more on Mike's cluelessness and Lacey's wounded emotional state and epiphanies than the media whirlwind that starts up once Laceys e-mail earns her Internet fame. In an attempt to escape the withering gaze of the media and local townsfolk, Lacey retreats to a family cabin, where the neighbor happens to be Lefty Monroe, a Hugh Jackman–looking cop-turned-writer. From here on out, it's a fairly predictable bit of meeting and initial dislike melting into attraction, with awkward forays into a writing project Lacey undertakes. Though the leads and support cast are witty and well-done, the characters Lacey doesn't like--Mike, his mistress--are little more than caricatures, and the story loses much of its verve once the LaceyLefty romance kicks in.

Well rounded!

With the recent Chick Lit and Women's Fiction I've been reading there has been this great balance between the humor and silliness and the heartfelt and real emotions and the book And One Last Thing... is no exception.

The always horrible issue of cheating and divorce is made a lot easier to handle when main character Lacey sends out an email detailing her horrible husband's activities. The fallout of that is crazy! To protect herself and get away from it all she stays at a family cabin where she expects to find isolation...

But instead she finds a grumpy but attractive man that wants to be left alone. One thing I really liked about this book was the idea of these two people basically being isolated from everyone else so if they have interactions it's going to be with each other. I don't normally find that that happens a lot in books at least for this long of a time period.

I thought Lacey and Monroe's relationship was sweet, they are first friends helping each other out, specifically Monroe helps Lacey decide where her life should take her next and then they become more. I found this book to be a lot of fun. Lacey was surrounded by a great cast of secondary characters including her brother, the woman that her husband is having an affair with (I love how they almost have it out in a parking lot!) It's definitely making me want to check out the authors Jane Jameson series!

Molly Harper is chick-lit perfection

I would say that Molly Harper is a friend-defining author. She writes the types of books that you proudly pass along to friends and if they hand them back to you after reading and say, "I just didn't get it" or "I didn't find her all that funny" then they're ex-communicated. Cut-off! Cut adrift! Molly Harper just inspires that kind of loyalty and passion in her friends... and with good cause!

Molly Harper is a chick-lit-romance-genius. I fell in love with her and her `Jane Jameson' paranormal romance series. And in `One Last Thing...', her first contemporary romance, I fall a little bit more in love/creepy-stalker-reader-infatuation with Ms Harper...

`And One Last Thing...' is a story of crushing blows and fist-pumping feminism. Lacey Terwilliger has become a cliché at 30 when she discovers that her husband, Mike, has been boning his secretary. In a fit of rage she e-mails a newsletter detailing Mike's sexcapades to his colleagues, friends and family... and gets slapped with a divorce and lawsuit in the same day. Lacey's wronged-woman rant goes viral and Lacey has to escape the media furore in the wake of her lawsuit. She decides to play hermit in her grandmother's abandoned cabin where her solitary wallowing is interrupted by a handsome Hugh Jackman-lookalike called `Lefty' Monroe.

It is at the cabin that Lacey finds peace, orgasms, acceptance, guilt and her literay voice...

It's no secret that I love Molly Harper. Her `Jane Jameson' series made her an instant-buy author for me, `And One Last Thing...' reiterates why. Harper had me snorting and convulsing within the first chapter, and by the end of the book my stomach muscles were sore from belly-aching laughs.

How to describe Harper's acerbic wit? She's a little bit of everything I love and find funny, her characters speak a language I understand and march to the beat of a drum I can hear. Lacey and Jane Jameson's sense of humour (which is ultimately Molly Harper's humour) is a dash of Veronica Mars, a splash of Gilmore Girls, a head-nod to Joss Whedon and a salute to Tina Fey. Screw `whiskers on kittens', those funnies are a few of my favourite things!

Molly Harper changes genres from `paranormal' to `contemporary' and loses none of her writing flavour. She seems to enjoy putting her female heroines through the emotional ringer; tearing them down only to make building them up that much sweeter to read. Lacey is absolutely put through her paces in the beginning of the book; lamenting everything about her marriage from Mike's cheating, to their stilted love-life (he thought `racy' was having sex in a camping tent). Harper isn't afraid to write what every woman thinks (at least once in her life) - everything from secretly despising `earth tones' in the home, to navigating the purchase of a vibrator.

And then, for Lacey, Monroe walks onto the scene.... right when she is at her most emotional and irrational, a hunky Wolverine-looking next-door-neighbour is dropped into her lap and things perk up. Monroe and Lacey are H-O-T, but I mostly loved them because their repartee was high-notch and hilarious. They bounce off of one another effortlessly and their scenes are fantastic!

I'm not surprised that I loved `And One Last Thing...'. Molly Harper rules, and I am embedded in her fan-club. She writes funny like it's nobody's business, and her romances are lush to read.

Always delightful author & narrator!

As always the combination of Author Molly Harper and narrator Amanda Ronconi is delightful!!

I loved this book from beginning to end! Lacey has such a snarky wit that is is easy to adore her! She really has some growth through the book and I was more than happy with the end result!!

To me the newsletter was a real "you go girl" moment. I probably would have done the same thing!

There are many fabulous supporting characters here and in typical Harper fashion a quirky but relateable vibe prevails.

I would love to see more for this, perhaps stories for her friends Sam and Maya. I would definitely be interested in those!

Fans of Ms Harper's Paranormal series may be slightly jarred by this book. No Vamps, Weres or supernatural of any sort, however it stays true to her delightfully snarky voice!! I really enjoyed it and found the story extremely entertaining. Sure the romance takes a back burner from most of the book, but I really felt it was Lacey's story on the Lacey and Monroe romance. It was about her finding herself again and discovering that she could in fact find a way to love and forgive.

Really great storytelling and wonderful reading!
