Concise and handy guide to Google Maps API

Why can't all tech books be written like this? It gets right to the point, and the reader starts scripting maps in the second paragraph of chapter 1. The style is, code first, code explained second, which is what I personally prefer. Examples are simple and clear, and progression is appropriate. Best for those who already know html, css and js/json. My recommendation is to type the code in by hand rather than use the downloads. The examples are mostly short and for me, this helps me retain the concepts. All code is useful, no fluff, especially the geocode script. Great as a series of tutorials, but also as a type of field manual. Well done.

This is a really handy guide to creating custom Google Maps with programming, allowing you to use the software in ways that are impossible through the typical user interface at maps.google.com. This is the book I've been looking for...

The most comprehensible, in-depth book on the subject of pranayama that I've yet found. Even more informative and accessible than B. K. S. Iyengar's "Light on Pranayama." As it is a more advanced yogic practice, pranayama can be somewhat difficult to explain and even more complicated to perform. Lysebeth has spared no secret and presents the processes involved in a clear, straight-forward manner. No hocus-pocus. Just the facts. This is the book I was looking for on these more advanced yogic practices.

Never thought pranayama would have such an impact on my life

I am a freediver (i dive without bottle). That sport requires an extreme concentration and capacity to handle stress. Pranayama is a known technique to improve diving performances because if you don't panic you will stay longer under water. However when i started to read the book i discovered that pranayama was usefull far beyong the scope of this book. By better controlling my body I came to reduce stress, diminish any pain i could have, be better at presenting courses (I am an IT trainer) and to increase my concentration.
The introduction to the book attemps to link science to yogist technics, but it's badly done and frankly could have been spared.
Fortunately most of the book covers the pranayama technique. The postures, which are illustrated with pictures greatly help to succeed in the technique. Some exercises had powerful effects on me such as lowering my heartbeat, increasing at will of skin temperature, tickeling effects in differents parts of my body or simply helping to fall asleep.
The book has opened a new perspective in my life. It helps me to feel better in my body.
If you have some knowledge on yoga, you can safely buy the book. Else you need to learn some basic postures to effectively make the exercices. You can take some class or buy from the same author "Yoga self Taught".

About the Author
Alex Varughese is professor of biblical literature at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and has been a member of the Department of Religion at MVNU since 1982. Previous to his current position, he served as a professor in the religion department at Eastern Nazarene College. He is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Kerala, India. He received his M.A. in religion from Olivet Nazarene University and M.Div. from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He also holds M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in biblical studies from Drew University. He is currently serving as the Managing Editor for The Centennial Initiative Textbook project for the Church of the Nazarene. Roger Hahn, Ph.D, is Dean and Professor of New Testament at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri. David Neale is Vice-President and Academic Dean at Booth University College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Previously he served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Ambrose University College (formerly Canadian Nazarene University College) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He holds a BA in Sociology from Idaho State University, an MA in Biblical Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield, England. Dr. C. Jeanne Serrao is Professor of Biblical Literature and Dean of the School of Theology and Philosophy at Mount Vernon Nazarene University where she founded and is the coordinator for the Bi-Annual Women In Ministry Networking Day.Dr. Serrao has served as an Education Pastor and Christian School Administrator in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The Final Piece is Here!

Rebecca gets her chance to talk to Kade McMillian whom she has thought herself in love with since high school. She has not had a real relationship because of her hang ups over him.

Then she met Jason, who is also her employee. He has real feelings for her and asks that she give him a chance. She gives in and they go on a work trip together alone to see if this is what they want.

Jason is really all that she has ever wanted. If only he were closer in age to her and not her employee. She is being encouraged to date him by everyone around her, but is reluctant to cause the company to have a bad reputation.

When she finally gets her dinner with Kade, Jason happens to walk in and see them together. Since she never told him what was going on - he thinks the worst. Can true love conquer all? Can the honest feelings be love? I found it compelling and was hard to put down! Makes a great gift!

Amazing!

Love the ending. what a great short story series. I absolutely loved it.

Book 3 picks up with her being torn between two,Kade and Jason. She decides that she wants to explore if Jason and her could really have the relationship she craves. They are heading to another town for a business meeting and he is going with her and she plans to straighten things out with Kade when she returns.

On the business trip she decides that she wants to be with Jason. He is the love she has been wanting for 16 years. She meets with Kade but things threaten Her relationship. Jason didn't know she was having dinner with Kade. Will Jason forgive her or Will her heart be once again be Broken?

I Denfinitely recommend this Series to everyone. Its a short story that you must read!

LOVED THE ENDING

received a book form the author for an honest review....

The conclusion to Rebecca story was amazing....she finally chooses one of the men who want her, I was really hoping it would be her business partner and best friend Parker, but no such luck. When Rebecca goes to tell the man she did not choose that there is no them, the one she did choose sees it and walks away.

Will the relationship be over as its starting???will Rebecca remain alone???

R is a rapidly evolving lingua franca of graphical display and statistical analysis of
experiments from the applied sciences. Currently, R offers a wide range of functionality for nonlinear regression analysis, but the relevant functions, packages and documentation are scattered across the R environment. This book provides a coherent and unified treatment of nonlinear regression with R by means of examples from a diversity of applied sciences such as biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine and toxicology.
The book begins with an introduction on how to fit nonlinear regression models in R. Subsequent chapters explain in more depth the salient features of the fitting function nls(), the use of model diagnostics, the remedies for various model departures, and how to do hypothesis testing. In the final chapter grouped-data structures, including an example of a nonlinear mixed-effects regression model, are considered.
Christian Ritz has a PhD in biostatistics from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University. For the last 5 years he has been working extensively with various applications of nonlinear regression in the life sciences and related disciplines, authoring several R packages and papers on this topic. He is currently doing postdoctoral research at the University of Copenhagen.
Jens C. Streibig is a professor in Weed Science at the University of Copenhagen. He has for more than 25 years worked on selectivity of herbicides and more recently on the ecotoxicology of pesticides and has extensive experience in applying nonlinear regression models. Together with the first author he has developed short courses on the subject of this book for students in the life sciences.

A Slim Volume, but Useful

Nonlinear Regression with R (NRwR) offers an example driven tour of R's base nonlinear regression tool, nls(). As you can glean from the table of contents, NRwR covers nonlinear models, generalized linear models, self-starting functions and model diagnostics (tools for inference as well). It does so in ~113 pages. BE WARNED. The book looks short because it is. Most of the material is helpful, but you are paying close to 50 bucks for a relatively short book.

High points:

-Model diagnostics are handled fairly well. The book walks you through checking for heteroskedacity, writing a function to test a hypothesis and dealing with mis-specified errors.

-Examples abound. If you read this book as it was intended, you will download the nlrwr package and follow along as the authors walk through datasets. Each page has sample code allowing you to reproduce the graphs and results in the book.

-Length can be an advantage. If you aren't particularly interested in the theory behind nonlinear regression, you wont be encumbered by it here.

-The bibliography is broken down by theme and is genuinely helpful.

Low Points:

-As reliant as the book is on nls(), I would love to have seen more digging into the peculiarities of this function. Chapter 4 is devoted to nls(), but it is a mere 16 pages, one of which is basically the gist of ?nls. I know it is beyond the scope, but I would have been excited to see more detail on nls so we can use the output from a nonlinear least squares problem as a building block to a larger function.

- organization for the book is a bit odd. The introduction is comprised of three examples of nonlinear regression in the field. It is about six pages and seems to have been cobbled together. The book would have been better served by a more thorough introduction.

-The topics covered are relatively narrow.

-Length is a serious factor.

All in all this is a good effort which would be easily 4 or 5 stars at a lower price point. I'm happy I bought it, but if your budget is constrained and you are forced to choose between this and another book on R's internals, think hard about the pros and cons.

Consise and to the point... but do not expect to learn R or the nuts and bolts of non-linear regression

This book is pretty concise and to the point: It will show you how to do non-linear regression with R but will teach you neither. If you are familiar with non-linear regression methodologies and have some familiarity with R, this book will have you using R for your non-linear regression needs in a snap. In this sense the short length and limited scope are an asset.

If you are not familiar with the theory behind non-linear regression I would certainly recommend complementing this book with a more in depth treatment of the subject. I found Bates and Watts to be very balanced in terms of presenting important information without being overwhelmingly mathematical. On the other hand, if you never used R, then you will need to learn it elsewhere as the book assumes certain level of familiarity with the environment.

In short, the book is a glorified tutorial on nls() and got me doing NLR in R pretty quickly. In this sense I recommend it and if price is not an issue I would think it is probably a good reference to have around. However, as other reviewers pointed out, the price seems disproportionate especially considering that there are other resources on-line that will do the trick. The price would be fairer if the book included tutorials in other related areas such as Bayesian inference with non linear models or an expanded treatment of non-linear mixed effects models, just to throw in some ideas.

Great Kickstart

This is a neat book. It's a great way to get an introduction to nonlinear regression via the use of R. It does not require any sort of heavy-hitting theoretical background; you can find other books (e.g., Seber and Wild) to fill in the details. By carefully studying the examples and the R code, one can definitely learn a few things that will serve as grist for future reading and applications. It's small size probably means you'll actually read it and suits its intended purpose!

About the Author
William E. Wagner, III, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Sociology at California State University, Channel Islands. Prior to coming to CSU, Channel Islands, he served as a member of the faculty and Director of the Institute for Social and Community Research at CSUB. He completed his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Wagner also holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics from St. Mary's College of Maryland. He has published in national and regional scholarly journals on topics such as urban sociology, sports, homophobia, and academic status. Dr. Wagner is co-author of Adventures in Social Research, 7th Edition (Babbie, Halley, Wagner, & Zaino, 2010)
